Dolphins guard Shelley Smith has finally returned to his comfort zone.
After experiments at left guard and center, Smith is expected to start the season-opener on the right side. It is the position he's played most of his career.
"He certainly did some good things [at center] but there was some inconsistency there," Dolphins coach Joe Philbin said. "I do think he's a little bit more at home playing at guard. That's where the vast majority of his time was spent."
Smith began training camp as the starting center in place of the injured Mike Pouncey. That lasted about "10 days or so" before the coaching staff made a change. After Smith endured struggles with the snap and the Dolphins re-acquired center Samson Satele, he switched to left guard.
He was then moved to the right side, where he's felt most comfortable.
"Definitely some learning struggles at first," Smith said of playing center. "I felt like I was getting more and more comfortable at it every day. It's just like anything else. The more you practice it, the better you get. I'm continuing to try to work at it."

Even though his position is becoming clearer, Smith said he will continue to work at all three spots the remainder of the season.
"Like I said, we're all out there competing," Smith said. "I'm trying to make sure I'm comfortable at all three spots. You never know what's going to happen during the course of the year. It's always a work in progress to try to get more comfortable."
