Every year NFL teams get to carry over unused salary cap from the previous season and bring it to the new year. There is no limitations on how many years you can roll over unused salary cap, so the best way is to think of it is like rollover minutes on your cellphone.

According to the NFL Players Association, the union which represents the player's interest, the NFL's 32 teams didn't use nearly $294 million in cap space last season.

Some teams were more frugal than others when it came to offseason spending, but they'll have a chance to close the gap this offseason. And a few teams will be forced to spend aggressively because of the NFL's minimum spending threshold, which equates a teams spending over a five-year window.

The Miami Dolphins are annually one of the highest cash spending teams in the NFL because of owner Steve Ross' aggressive approach to building a winner. However, Miami typically squirrels away $7-13 million in cap space to carry over to each season.

Dolphins management typically views that unused cap space as a break in case of emergency fund, which allows them to be aggressive with trades, re-negotiations, and last minute free agents.

This year the Dolphins have the sixth most unused cap carry over from 2016, which should put Miami in position to have an aggressive offseason IF the team's decision makers desire.

The Dolphins presently have $21.5 million in cap space if the projection of a $168 million salary cap in 2017 is correct.

And when that $8.3 million cap carry over is added to that total Miami is expected to have roughly $29.8 million in cap space to use before creating even more spending room by purging a few players with bloated salaries.

Just a tweak here. If, in fact, Miami carries over a few mil annually, the best projection should be they'll do it again in '17. Thus, I'd not count on the $8.3mm carry over as available for salaries. Reasonable people can debate whether that number will be $5mm or $10mm, but I doubt anyone really expects Miami to use all $8.3mm.

But Suh's contract put us in cap hell!!!!!!!!

So I do believe we're in decent spot cap-wise. But, we're looking at these things in FA: 1) re-sign Reshad Jones, 2) Early re-sign Landry, 3) re-sign Stills, 4) sign Kiko, 5) sign some DL to replace Williams and Jones and maybe Mitchell, and a few other odds and ends. Then, 6) sign a starting RG if Albert stays and also a starting LG if we don't retain Albert.

So, our cap will look different after those things are done. In the draft, we'll need a LB and likely TE. Our cap is probably going to allow for a RG and possibly 1 other solid FA after we re-sign our main guys and fill the DL holes. After that we'll be looking at low level FA's later in the process.

We're in great shape regardless. Kudos to the Fins management.

with all that cap space, Miami would be FOOLS to not get 2 of the best offensive guards in FA's. Imagine if we don't sign Albert or Stills back, we get rid of Dion and Cameron and Williams....that's more money. We shift Tunsil to LT, and we sign...hmm....Leary and Zeitler. Our OL just became Top 5.

Now in the draft, you go defense all the way.

I find it baffling how San Francisco has upwards of 100 million in cap room. They can essentially buy at minimum 6 high priced FAs.

Its a little misleading beacuse this again like the last article that was posted refers to 'carry over cap monies' not total cap space.

There are many teams ahead of us this year overall..
