“To me it’s like pretty much the whole team playing as one, just being smart and tough at the same time,” defensive end Olivier Vernon said. “It kind of reminds me of the Spartans in the ‘300’ movie, how all those guys were together facing off against the Persians. It signifies pretty much that: one as a unit.”
To go along with the shield, the players also now have T-shirts that read, “ONE TEAM, ONE FIGHT, WIN THE DAY,” at the top and bottom along with the words “smart,” “sound” and “tough” inscribed in a circle in between.
Head Coach Joe Philbin explained after practice Thursday how the shield and T-shirts came to be.
“The players took time on Sunday as a football team to kind of celebrate the 53 guys that made the roster and their position coaches gave them their T-shirts,” Philbin said. “The players kind of came up with that. As in a lot of things in life, there’s certain rituals and symbols. We wanted to kind of make it a special occasion for them, and the shield is kind of the symbol of everybody together, one team.”
Two things I noticed, the Patriots are the Persians, and coach Joe says we need to do rituals to win games, lol!
