DAVIE, Fla. – The Miami Dolphins began the offseason with a lot of questions at linebacker.

Two former starters -- Dannell Ellerbe and Philip Wheeler -- were traded and released, respectively.

Koa Misi also didn’t know if he was playing middle linebacker or outside linebacker this season.

But things have gone better than expected for Miami at linebacker this summer. Various linebackers are doing well this preseason, both starters and backups. Miami’s linebackers also are making plays on special teams.

This means Miami has tough decisions to make at linebacker this week. The Dolphins have at least nine players at the position who are capable of making the 53-man roster. However, the Dolphins can't keep them all.

“Some of it is dependent upon the quality of the depth of other positions as well,” Dolphins coach Joe Philbin said. “I think historically 4-3 teams carry six, seven linebackers maybe, somewhere in that vicinity. But it could be less or it could be more than that. It all depends how the roster shakes out, how practice goes and how the game goes on Thursday night, who we think the best 53 guys are.”

The Dolphins have four locks at linebacker: Jelani Jenkins, Misi, Kelvin Sheppard and Chris McCain. From there, five players are fighting to two spots. It is an interesting mix, with one veteran in Spencer Paysinger and young playersJordan Tripp, Zach Vigil, Mike Hull, Neville Hewitt and Jeff Luc.

Vigil is the safest bet to take one of the two remaining roster spots. He’s been the most consistent in preseason games and also brings value on special teams. Paysinger and Hull, an undrafted rookie, could be fighting for the last linebacker spot.

This is a very important week for Tripp, who missed a good portion of training camp with a calf injury. He is a former 2014 fifth-round pick who has failed to stay healthy. Thursday’s preseason finale against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is a good showcase for linebackers such as Tripp, Hewitt and Luc to try to earn a roster spot in Miami or elsewhere.

I still dislike Sheppard at mlb

Amazing how the presence of Suh makes all these LBs look good. Not being sarcastic. Makes a huge difference. ZT was so effective because he had Bowens and Gardner tying people up. Same thing now - no matter who plays LB for us they will look better than last year.

f you ask me, I will go with Tripp and Vigil for the last two spots but I have a feeing they will go wit 7 lbs and stash two on pS. Paysinger does nothing for me.

Hewitt and luc are out already...its tripp paysinger and hull

Vigils already on the 53

If they keep 8 you keep all 3 id keep 7 paysinger for specials and tripp...p squad hull...no ones taking him from you unless its just 2 weeks for information...chance i am more than ok with taking

If they cut paysinger due to lack of upside i sure wont care...

I have to believe that Vigil has the lead on a spot and I also think they keep more than 6.

They will keep 7 LBs imo. Misi, Sheppard, Jenkins, McCain, Vigil, Paysinger and Tripp. 2 of the 3 out of Hull, Luc and Hewitt will be signed to the practice squad. You can't cut Tripp just because he had an ankle injury. He was having an excellent camp up until that point.

In 2016 this team needs to get serious about its lbs...its past due time and its the biggest hole in the team depth wise

Seriously doubt we keep only 6 . . . especially with injury prone guys like Misi and Tripp.

7 seems more appropriate. I've gotta keep Paysinger tho for special teams . . . so question becomes Vigil or Hull. Loser for one PS spot and then the Luc/Hewitt winner gets another PS spot.

No question this is the position group that has the most to gain/lose on Thursday. Tripp needs to show up also . . . he's got the measurables to be solid but if he can't stay on the field I could see Miami cutting him loose for one of the youngsters.

If Jamar Taylor can't stay healthy, Miami needs to address a top flight CB as well, but yea, LB I'd agree is the weakest positional unit on the team. I will say having a top 3 DLine in front of the guys we have makes it "less" of an issue . . . i.e. I'd rather have it the way we have it over having top flight LBs and a shaky Dline.

If you keep 8 on the oline it allows you to keep another wr or lb or corner or safety etc...i doubt id invest it in an 8th lb looking at this group...

I think the team should keep 2 tight ends too
