Starter Anthony Fasano stayed clear of this vortex of misery, but the incumbent has had his share of drops so far, including a costly bobble in the preseason opener that led to Chad Henne's first interception.

No wonder Dolphins coach Tony Sparano looked as if he'd swallowed some rancid milk when asked Monday if he was "happy" with what he's been getting from his tight ends.

"Happy in that I like the group of people that are there, yes," Sparano said. "As far as the production of the group right now, no, not quite so."

Those feelings of positional inadequacy only figure to worsen Friday night.

That's when the lowly Carolina Panthers parade into town with a pair of tight ends the Dolphins easily could have had this offseason if they'd only been willing to pay the price.

Jeremy Shockey and Greg Olsen, two of the best ever to play the position at the University of Miami, have been reunited with new Panthers (and former UM) offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski.

True, Shockey's body keeps breaking down, but he did help the Saints win a Super Bowl barely 18 months ago at Sun Life Stadium.

Reggie Bush didn't score a touchdown in that epic upset of the Colts.

Shockey did.

Got to wonder if the TE by Committee approach is going to be bolstered by someone who is cut by another team - and the FO is likely watching would be cuts - because we need more from the TEs - Fasano is no leader, no winner, and he should feel the footsteps behind him

Our fault.. we had very athletic TE's in late rounds to grab the past two drafts/FA's and we did NOTHING. Clay doesn't count to me at this point just based on the fact that we haven't seen him play TE exclusively yet.

Hes been in 2 te sets with the first team for awhile.

Hes got the recieving down but not the blocking.

OMG....who writes these articles? pure rubbish....so the writer wants us to beleive that Shockey was more important to the Saints winning a SB than Bush because he scored a TD and Bush didnt?.....You can not have a superstar at every position, we went with speed and youth and if Henne can do what he is suppose to do the TE on this team will have plenty of catches....I applaude this FO for not panicking and signing every name that was available and not killing our cap for years......It may cost them there jobs but at least the next FO wont be handcuffed for two yrs and will be able to go out and find the remaining pieces thts needed, we are a good QB away form making a run, if Henne steps it up we will see it this yr.

You're 100% correct. I cannot understand why lots of good prospects are ignored. But we did get John Jerry in round 3 last year....

who gives the **** about those underachieving ****s on the panthers. if we were gonna cry about the TE that got away and that we apparently didn't give a **** about, I'd cry about zach miller.

I consider Olsen an upgrade over Fasano, and Shockey nothing less than a quality backup. Both would have been decent options.

Teams that have Marshall, Fitzgerald, Keyshawn Johnson and other big body high volume receivers rarely have high production from the tight end.
