Dolphins interview Gaine, Khan, Licht for GM today

I've interviewed 100's of people for jobs over the last 10-15 years. Bringing multiple candidates in is not unusual. Generally they don't see the same people all at once, but we rotate interviewers among the candidates. It really allows for excellent and instant comparisons among the team of interviewers. When done, we compare notes, narrow the field and invite a limited number (usually two...maybe three) back for a second/even third interview to make the final call.

Now the lions share of these jobs are not at a level of GM, but some were. In all honesty, after you do that many, you can make a determination in the first 30 minutes on the vast majority of candidates. I would be surprised if we don't have a follow up interview with a couple of these candidates, but occasionally you can find one that just clicked so well you make an offer before they've hit the highway home.
*Laughs*

I told my wife with pretty good reliability if I got the job or not.

I've had some variables, but for the most part, I know.

Other than Licht, Gaine seems to have the most experience on the scouting side. Not sure hiring him is a bad thing. 3 hours is a sufficient amount of time for an initial interview. Quality time is far better than quantity. It shouldn't take more than 3 hours to determine if the interviewee is a strong candidate needing a second interview.

MadDog, be sure.

The scary part: Continuity would actually make sense for the absurd nature of Dolphin football operations.

Ross: We have to try something new, Jeff. It's just not working.

Jeff: No problem. :whispers into chest: did you get all that, Mando?

Ross: Gaine, how long have you been a part of evaluating the ungodly amount of talent we've pilfered in these recent drafts?

Gaine: Same as Jeff, sir.

Ross: Outstanding. You're hired.

MadDog, please be sure.

Does anyone know who is on the interviewing panel? Does each candidate have group interviews or lots of one on ones and then the interviewers huddle and compare notes?

How the hell do you interview three guys in one day for an important position such as the GM role?

Blows my mind. Either rushing along, or these guys aren't front runners.

I think your right...none of these are front runners.

Im just laughing at some of these posters who nit pick over interviewing three guys on the same day. Complaining just to complain.

They're all supposed to be wine and dined...at this rate Ross will be hammered by 4:30.

In terms of familiarity with the organization and with Ross personally, Gaine has the clear upper hand having spent the past six seasons in Miami’s front office. He just completed his second season in his current role, evaluating players on the professional and collegiate level and is widely recognized around the league as a top-notch talent evaluator. Prior to being promoted, Gaine directed the Dolphins’ scouting operations and played a key role in draft preparation.
Gaine came to Miami along with Ireland from the Dallas Cowboy, where he worked under former Dolphins Executive Vice President of Football Operations Bill Parcells from 2005-07. He was Dallas’ assistant director of pro scouting and prior to that he spent six years (1999-2004) in the New York Jets’ scouting department. That was a smooth transition for Gaine, who spent time on the Jets’ and New York Giants’ practice squads as a tight end after starring at the University of Maine from 1991-95.

THIS IS BAD...... REALLY BAD!!!

first off, BRIAN GAINE, KNOWN WIDELY AS A TOP NOTCH TALENT EVALUATOR?

where? not here for sure as we have been one of the most talent starved teams in the last 10 years or so.

the jets? they have hit on some free agents, mainly having to dip in because their drafts have plundered. hows franchise qb SANCHEZ worked out? sorry, but i dont look at the jets or finz over the last 6 years and go, OH YEAH, THERES THE TALENT TEAMS!!!

i am trying soooooo hard to give ross a pass, that after doing what i thought would NEVER happen this off season and fire ireland that maybe he has gotten the picture, a GM that CAN draft AND recognize real talent. but, this gaine thing is giving me the creeps!!!!!!

we know all about the big NEW YORK JETS ring with gaine, aponte and ross. they LOVES THEM some new york jets! thats all we have heard, tannenbaum, mansweenie, etc..... and now, the first guy in the gate is jets boy himself, BRIAN FRIGGIN" GAINE!!!

SO HERE IS WHAT most likely will unfold: we heard boss ross say all about that his new gm would be his own man, rule with full autonomy. and i am sure he means that... sort of. he will name GAINE gm and the TRIO of good pals, ross and aponte and gaine will be a three headed gang green monster!! and they will have each others arse at ALL COSTS!! and you wont hear a thing bad, EVER about each other, gaine will be the face of the nyj threesome structure that has been rumored.

its ALL there folks. it appears we are getting the big dupe on the gm gig. the speech will come ANY DAY now and it will sound like this........... .

"WE interviewed some GREAT TALENT during the process and some of the people, even though talented and qualified didnt mesh with what our future goals are. we thank all those men for giving us their time. WE HAVE DECIDED TO HIRE BRIAN GAINE as the NEW GM OF THE MIAMI DOLPHINS! and after searching hard and having some eye opening interviews, brian was the CLEAR CHOICE as he has been with the "organization" and he knows myself and dawn and the players very well. he is on board 100% on our long term goal to make the MIAMI DOLPHINS the flag ship franchise of the nfl, getting us back to those glory days of DON SHULA and DAN MARINO!! we feel the talent is here outside of a couple players and we are absolutely sure that brian can fill these missing pieces and be the football right hand man that i personally need. so, without further a due, let me introduce the MIAMI DOLPHINS NEW GENERAL MANGER, BRIAN GAINE!!!!"

and he will commense with his "glad to be here, thank you mr. ross, looking forward to getting to work, great tools i have to help the progress, dawn aponte, coach philbin".... etc....., etc.... .

this is one of those times i hope to SWEET GOD ALMIGHTY that i am dead wrong and tuesday afternoon TOM GAMBLE is at the podium. but its looking bad....... REAL BAD!!!

Gaine directed the Dolphins’ scouting operations and played a key role in draft preparation. A KEY ROLL? IN THIS MESS? then HE should have been thrown out with ireland!! ross CLEARLY didnt fire him because he didnt like how the drafts and player aquisitions have gone, IT WAS A POWER PLAY, HEADED BY DAWN APONTE AND HER LACKY, COACH PHILBIN [who i like].

this is all about killing two birds with one stone, appeasing the fans with a sacrificial lamb and installing the NY threesome. PRETTY SLICK!! and we have already heard from LOTS of sources this very power play DID happen. ireland lost to aponte and philbin. the USED philbin as another voice and nothing else. he will be getting the "just coach the team" quips letting him know he rode their wave to keep his gig.

i keep my ear to the air. radio sports both national and internet radio. i listen to guys like gil brandt and all the draft gurus like MIKE MAYOCK and i have NEVER heard the name BRIAN GAINE in ANY talk, PERIOD!! especially as some "league respected talent evaluator"!!

i think we are being sold a fake bill of goods.

Not sure hiring him is a bad thing

really MADDOG? your happy with the talent we have brought in over the last 6 years?

once i read gaine had a KEY influence on our talent evaluation and draft, THAT EXCLUDED HIM for me!! this was a strike against, not for!!

mr. ross thanks you.

I am critical of Ross, Joe, Aponte etc. However, I have no issues with the GM search. I am not seeing names like Pioli and Tannebaum so I am pleased. Seems like they have a handful guys that deserve a shot to run a team.

IMO Gaine will be among the 3 finalists. If Gamble interviews he will be the second of three. The third could come down to Farmer, Ross, or Highsmith if he interviews. Like I said this is my opinion obviously I have no info about the inner workings of the meetings or organization. My opinion is based on what I read about each candidate, their links to our organizations, their backgrounds, and reputations. Gamble would be the favorite with Gaine a close second. My opinion could change if Highsmith interviews. There's something about him that stands out. Not sure what it is yet. Gamble, Gaine, and Highsmith or Farmer. That's my pecking order.

boss ross and dawn aponte. :boohoo:

no it's Ross and Carl Peterson.

Also I don't really think each candidate getting 3 hours is a bad thing.

And for those complaining about the possibility of promoting Brian Gaine. You can do a lot worse than promoting him.

If you can get the answers to the questions you ask, and the candidate can convey his ideas, in 3 hours then why would you need 4?
