Dolphins' Jeff Ireland fights off perception team lacks plan

If you're going to be as big an ******* as AJ "Lord of No Rings" Smith, you better be as good at scouting talent as AJ Smith is, and Ireland just isn't.

You are assuming that Joe Philbin and Jeff Ireland were on the exact same page about Matt Flynn. That is a BAD assumption. Joe Philbin gave the Dolphins the green light thumbs up to go after Matt Flynn. He called Flynn multiple times. He met with him down in Miami. He sweet talked him. He left the rest to Jeff Ireland, admitting HIMSELF that he has absolutely zero to do with the money involved in these offers as that is Jeff Ireland's job. After getting sweet talked by Philbin via phone and in person, Flynn gets in a room with Jeff Ireland and Ireland tried to bend him over and ass rape him. It was a strong CONTRADICTION in message and that is exactly what Flynn did not like, and it's why he went running for the hills.

The thing Joe Philbin did not do is demand that Flynn be here at all costs because he's an elite quarterback. But as a first time Head Coach working under a General Manager that he's not familiar with, the chances of him demanding anything were slim, and it's ridiculous to expect a guy like Philbin to evaluate Matt Flynn as an elite level quarterback based on two starts. I don't care how much practice and meeting time you've had with the guy, you don't know if the guy plays well in the games until he plays in the games, and you don't know how he handles an entire season let alone multiple seasons of being a starter until he does that.
Come on CK, you're just as much assuming a this point, unless you were in that room, how can you state its a bad assumption as fact?

Didnt know or care if Ireland had a plan or not. "Having a plan" has never reassured me. Because even if he does have one, its a pretty crappy plan.

Vladimir I. Lenin had a plan, A Hitler had a plan. Bernie Madoff had a plan. Bill Parcells had a plan.

So when i hear that Ireland has a plan that was different from last seasons and from the season befpoe that one I'm not impressed.

And when i'm told that the best players on this team are ones we traded for and we are paying too much for, i'm not excited either.

The fact that its been confirmed that Philbin talked to Flynn multiple times to assure him that he was a big part of our plans. The fact that Philbin kept working on Flynn even while Ireland was screwing the pooch with Manning. The fact that Flynn has come out and praised Philbin and has been publically declaring that he would have fit perfect in Philbins scheme, but the reason why he didnt sign was "the feeling he got in Seattle was much better then in Miami".

If Philbin didnt think Flynn was worth the effort, why fly him in at all? Its obvious that Ireland didnt feel he was worth the time. Arent we alittle past "projects"? Either the quarterback can play or he cant. Philbin felt he could. Ireland clearly felt he couldnt. Given Ireland's record with quarterback evaluations, i believe Seattle got a steal.

And all your doing is assuming that they weren't on the same page. I think your distaste for Ireland is understandable but to believe they arent on the same page is a bad assumption itself.

There is evidence to support that assumption.

"Go ask Matt Flynn why he's in Seattle".

That translates to "I wanted him here and ireland didn't, but I can't dare tell you that so you'll have to let Flynn say it for me".

JOE PHILBIN'S HANDS ARE TIED. You heard it here first.

I spoke with my buddy and he confirmed for me that straight up NOBODY wants to play in Miami. The weight and figer points directly to Jeff. The feeling umongst players is he just flat out lies. He cant be trusted in what he tells you and he's just not in touch with today's players.

I met Scott Pioli a few times and I can tell you the guy is a very nice guy. He will laugh and joke with you and make you feel like he really knows you. Remind you I'm just a guy that he met thru one of his scouts, not a player that he wants on his team.

I just dont get that feeling from Jeff.

How many has he signed without the aegis provided by the presence of Bill Parcells, though?

RIDICULOUS. A truly RIDICULOUS, LUDICROUS offer. They're giving essentially the same amount of money to David Garrard. That $4 million a year is BARELY over what they gave Matt Moore. If this is the offer you plan on making to a Matt Flynn, you do NOT even fly him in for a visit.

In this case, it was a poker game. Going into free agency, everybody thinks that Miami is in the best situation to gauge the value of Matt Flynn. If Miami shows no interest or pursuit, then that is damning of Matt Flynn's value.

If the Dolphins are targeting a QB in the draft, and they want to reduce the competition on draft day, then it benefits them to at least feign interest in Matt Flynn, maybe convincing a potential draft day competitor to jump in and throw some money at him. In this case, Seattle. Though maybe they were hoping to convince Cleveland.

It's possible that Tannehill or Weeden have been the prime non-Manning targets all along. We will see.

Garrard isn't getting 4 million...he is getting near vet minimum (little over a Mil) with incentives to earn that much. Incentives he won't reach. Flynn could have earned more than 4 million a year, but he knew he wasn't good enough to earn the incentives given to him. Flynn got the money when he could, he'll be the next Kolb.

offered $ 4 mil to matt flynn and gave a year non guaranteed offer to garrards corpse for $3.5 mil before incentives...you kiddin me...i'm surprised matt flynn even visited given that contract offer...he must have thought once he got here we'd make a real offer...$4 mil is not a real offer

it's a joke
It's actually an acceptable offer to a QB that your not sure is starting material

Garrard is getting $3.5m in base salary. He has incentives that can jump up to $4.5m.
