Omar Kelly's latest glimpse into the position battles that will highlight this week.

http://blogs.sun-sentinel.com/sports_football_dolphins/2008/08/dolphins-list-e.html

His position battles are the following:

Paul Soliai or Rodrique Wright

Sean Ryan or Justin Peelle

Greg Camarillo or Davone Bess

Chris Crocker or Renaldo Hill

Nathan Jones or Joey Thomas

Boomer Grigsby or Reagan Mauia

It's a decent write-up. I think I would probably put the position battles a little differently, but to each his own. Personally I think it would be silly to put Soliai on the list of people in danger of being cut. I think he's as safe as just about anyone, at this moment, unless he does something stupid over the coming week or two. As Omar says, Reagan's doom is probably already spelled out. Curious why he would pit Jones and Thomas against each other. Is he suggesting we keep only 4 cornerbacks? If so, the question is probably more Nathan Jones vs. Joey Thomas vs. Renaldo Hill...with us likely to keep two of the three. I think the fifth safety question comes at the expense of a fifth cornerback (teams normally keep five). I would personally disagree that Camarillo and Bess are competing with each other but then again, considering how much waiver activity we're likely to engage in, maybe Omar has it right.

Of course, it wouldn't be an Omar Kelly piece if there wasn't a glaring gaffe.

Safeties Chris Crocker or Renaldo Hill - This really isn't much of a battle now considering Crocker is going into his second week as the starting free safety, the position Hill held last season before tearing his ACL. Crocker's five tackle, one sack and one forced fumble performance last weekend against the Chiefs likely earned him a spot on the 53-man roster. But Hill's interception and strong special teams play might warrant the Dolphins keeping five safeties. This will come down to a numbers game. Fourth quarterback or fifth safety?

What game was Omar watching? Crocker had 1 solo tackle and 1 assisted tackle. He *did* force a fumble on special teams, but it was called back by an illegal formation penalty on Justin Peelle.

It would appear Omar relied on the NFL Gamebook for his observations of what went on Saturday. It's an honest mistake but, if you're going to do that, you should probably not confuse the name "C.Crowder" for "C.Crocker".

Nice.

I'd like to see Justin Peele stay. He seems to make plays when asked.

Is it just me or does anyone else think this blog should come equipped with background music from this Kenny Loggins smash hit:

Revvin' up your engine
Listen to her howlin' roar
Metal under tension
Beggin' you to touch and go

Highway to the Danger Zone
Ride into the Danger Zone

Headin' into twilight
Spreadin' out her wings tonight
She got you jumpin' off the track
And shovin' into overdrive

Highway to the Danger Zone
I'll take you
Right into the Danger Zone

You'll never say hello to you
Until you get it on the red line overload
You'll never know what you can do
Until you get it up as high as you can go

Out along the edges
Always where I burn to be
The further on the edge
The hotter the intensity

Highway to the Danger Zone
Gonna take you
Right into the Danger Zone

Highway to the Danger Zone

the way this roster is right now i would keep solai and wright. depending on if a young nt gets released or maybe even a veteran this regime trusts would come available would determine how long solai is on this roster for me.

wright i don't want to lose period. especially if the regime puts serious thought into moving merling to olb full time down the road. although wright isn't much of a run defender.

if it's camarillo and bess i roll the dice with bess personally.

i would also keep peele over ryan. although peeles salary may play into if he's released.

nice catch ck on the crocker gaffe.

I think I agree on all that. Although I find it tough to imagine a waiver wire guy replacing Paul Soliai. The one thing I'd add though is there's always a tendency for our team's fans to overestimate the likelihood of one of our guys getting scooped off waivers before we can place him on the practice squad...so there's this sense that if we cut Bess we'll lose him forever. I don't think that's true. He's small, he's not fast, and his preseason stats are underwhelming. He also plays on a WRs unit that most of the league think is bottom 5, if not the worst in the league. How many teams are really waiting in line to try and get the 54th or 55th best prospect on the 1-15 Miami Dolphins?

So, when it comes to Bess or Camarillo, I wouldn't mind cutting Bess thinking we'll probably be able to stash him.

i just think bess will get scooped up if released. camarillo screams average at best to me. bess though doesn't look very sudden.

Yeah, I think Omar was trying to be thorough in guys that could possibly be gone once the cuts are made.

You must admit, Solai has improved in his second year, but that could be from terrible to less than terrible. I haven't seen practice to know, but he was good in Jax game, average against KC. (He was part of a nice goal line stand next to Ferguson though)

His cornerbacks battle had more to do with seeing Jason Allen and Crocker in coverage in nickel and dime I'd think. We'll keep 5, but I think one of them isn't on the roster yet.

I think we'll grab a WR and cut one also, but it sure seems that Bess has played his way onto the team as of now.

CK, you aren't a big fan of Omar, and he makes mistakes for sure, but at least he didn't bag on Beck this blog! =P

Ha, I've been looking at Crock's stats and thinking where the hell did they come from. Truth is we should all be very concerned if Crocker beats out Allen at the FS spot.

I think playing the safties at corner was to see if they would rather keep extra safties or corners. I think Crocker, Allen and Hill are all too talented to cut in favor of those two corners mentioned. I especially think Hill is very underated around here, and will stick around. He also seems to do well on special teams. Sparano was quoted as saying " He is a FOOTBALL player."

Not concerned if Crocker beats out Allen, Allen is not all that good.

I definately hope Wright makes team, I think his ceiling is much higher than Solai

We are running a completely different scheme from last year and from what Atlanta ran. Based on that, its unfair to say Jason Allen or Chris Crocker "suck" in the new system, considering all we know is some training camp notes by 3rd party journalists and a few preseason games. Both or one of those guys could excel in the new system, if it plays to their strengths......
