Several projected defensive starters will get their first preseason action Friday night when the Dolphins face the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium, while the first-team offense will be looking to show progress after a frustrating preseason debut.

Even tough the Dolphins pulled away for a relatively easy 27-10 victory against the New York Giants last Friday night, quarterback Ryan Tannehill and the first-team offense failed to gain a first down on two possessions.

“Really, for the offense, it’s like, let’s move the ball,” Head Coach Adam Gase said. “I mean, we had seven plays and punted both times. Really had negative plays. Just didn’t do anything. We need to move the ball. I’m not going to say like, hey, we gotta score two touchdowns or have 10 points. It’s just, let’s move the ball, let’s have positive plays, let’s put our defense in some good positions. Field position wise, we weren’t helping anybody last game, especially the first five series.

“We need to do a better job of being consistent, move the ball down the field, whether it be run game, short passing game, throwing the ball down the field. Whatever it is, let’s figure out a way to move the ball.”

Gase said he wasn’t putting a specific number on the snaps the first-team offense will play against the Cowboys, emphasizing that what he sees will be more important than how long he sees it.

Running back Arian Foster is expected to make his first appearance in a Dolphins uniform after being held out of the Giants game, and wide receiver DeVante Parker also is expected to make his preseason debut.

Mario Williams, Cam Wake, Ndamukong Suh, Jason Jones, Reshad Jones and Byron Maxwell all are expected to play against Dallas after sitting out the preseason opener — Maxwell was sidelined by a minor injury, while the others were rested.

It will be the first game action for a Dolphins defensive line that has been dominating in training camp and the vaunted Dallas offensive line will present a nice challenge.

I really liked the play calls and the balance in the first pre season game. I saw lot's of promise there running on first and second downs. They need to clean up the blocking on the offensive side, and run d on the defense. I'm not sure if it was the DL, LB or secondary responsible on the first drive march for a TD.

I can't explain how excited I am to see arian foster in action. I can't even wrap my brain around him being here, if he's any kind of approximation of his old self.

Tannehill needs to take off an run one, just to keep the D honest. If the D line pushed upfield like the Giants did, step up and take off! Move the pocket a bit too!

I can't understand how he couldn't have been a damn-close version of his former self if we signed him. I would think that he would've had to show at least 95% of his ability to even get signed.

he was all but done as a football player by many accounts. so 95% of his ability would be a hell of a deal for us. i've got my finger's crossed that he hasn't lost too much to age and injury and can still produce at an elite level (even as a role player).
