At this time last year, the Dolphins were going through a significant learning process after the arrival of new offensive coordinator Bill Lazor. This year it’s more about fine-tuning for players such as quarterback Ryan Tannehill, running back Lamar Miller, wide receiver Jarvis Landry, offensive linemen Mike Pouncey and Ja’Wuan James, and so many others.

Besides, Lazor likes the new skill players he has on offense.

“I’m excited about the guys that are here,” Lazor said. “I was excited about the acquiring of every single one of them that is here. They walk in the building every day with enthusiasm, they walk on the field with energy. They did it when it was on air and they did it (Tuesday). I’m absolutely certain we’ll be better (Wednesday) and that’s all I can ask of them.”

He is excited about the possibilities for the passing game.

“I’m real excited about the guys,” Tannehill said. “Right now we’re just kind of scratching the surface. We have a long way to go until we’re ready to compete full time, but right now we’re getting better each and every day. I’m excited about the abilities that the guys have shown thus far and we’re only going to get better.”

Tannehill went as far as to call his new group of receivers the best he’s had the opportunity to work with since he first joined the Dolphins in 2012.

The quarterback has improved every year since the Dolphins made him the eighth overall pick three years ago, and Lazor said Tannehill has done everything this offseason to make sure that steady rise continues in his second year in the offensive system.

“I think everything should be better,” Lazor said. “Everything should be clearer. I’m very happy with how his offseason went and the time that we got to spend with him. Ryan is an extremely hard worker. He’s a very intelligent guy and he wants to do it right. I don’t know that you could script a better formula for a guy to be successful and that’s how he’s approached it and I’m really proud of how far he’s gone in the offseason and I think we were all waiting for this time of year now where you get to have a defense out there to throw against and really try to put yourself to the test, and that’s what he’s doing.”
“Part of it is it’s year two in this system and this scheme,” Head Coach Joe Philbin said. “We’ve got some new guys, so we’re getting them adjusted as quickly as we possibly can. They don’t necessarily have preconceived notions of, I’m a this, or I’m a that. What we’re really doing is installing concepts offensively as we are on defense and special teams and we want to expose guys to different things. That’s one of the major focuses that we have. We met at length as an offensive staff last week and we talked and said, OK, let’s get some of these guys some reps at this position and not get locked in so if one injury occurs we’re all not of the sudden reinventing the wheel, so to speak.”

THis is probably the most understated reson why the offensie will improve. Tannehill knows it, he can now master it.

All things considered Lazor did a hell of a job last season, and his unit performed well enough to get us in the playoffs. This will be our last season with him as offensive coordinator however, either he will be purged along with the rest of the coaching staff or he'll get a head coaching gig next season.

I'm pretty impressed with him myself, but why do you think that'll happen?

Given that we have any sort of success in the post season, I'm not so sure he'd be quick to jump off the wagon. Young talent on offense, a young and (hopefully) still improving QB, and a lot of guys he's coached up. Not to mention the sort of teams that are going to need new coaches don't always serve as tantalizing opportunities....

Well, he was a QB coach 2 years ago, and has only been an NFL OC for exactly 1 year. Depends on what kind of guy he is, but, if I were him, I'd want to get some more experience for a couple more years before I start saying I'm ready to take over an entire team and staff. Quite a bit of a jump there.

The biggest improvement or reason why this offense will be improved is the flexibility of the receiving corps. Every single one of the, can line up anywhere on the field and be effective. This is why Green Bay's offense flourishes and why this one will this season.

The team is either going to be amazing or same ole same ole. Same ole same ole would be 8 or 9 wins and everybody will likely be fired. The path to amazing relies upon the offense kicking some ass. If the offense kicks ass it'll allow the defense to do what its built to do: get after the passer. Both units will then help each other and blowing teams out will happen with regularity, like what happened in the Chargers game. Remember, we forced McKoy to pull Rivers before the 4th quarter that game because he was afraid of our aggro defense teeing off on him.

The Dolphins offense ranked:
2012- 21st
2013- 18th
2014- 8th
And if everything I wrote above comes to pass the offense will rank top 5 and we'll win 12 or 13 games. Lazor already looks and sounds like a Head Coach and he'll get some interviews at the very least even at that point. And with some home field advantage in the playoffs who knows what could happen.

This season I am most looking forward to seeing Tannehill with a full compliment of skill players and an improved OL. He has all the physical tools with the exception of the long ball so hopefully he has worked on that in the off season. He seemed to falter in the end of games the past couple of seasons but it is hard to put 100% of that totally on him with our below average/terrible OL and the OC before Lazor being too predictable in the play calling and the opposition making adjustments. Hopefully the second year in Lazor's offense will be Tannehill's coming out year and he will gain the confidence this team needs to make the playoffs and make some noise once they are there.

Otherwise, I would like to see the defense play an entire year together without the type of injuries last season. With the additions they have made, combined with the players coming back healthy from injuries, they should be much improved this season as well.

I am excited for the season and I will be making the pilgrimage to the promised land to finally watch a home Dolphins game after 40+ years as a fan in Michigan. I have seen them play in 8 other stadiums but it will be nothing like seeing them at Sun Life.

I agree Lazor is a good OC Lazor needs 3 years as an OC before he gets a shot. Most coaches are coordinators for at least 3 years first
