Gase, at 37, becomes the NFL’s youngest head coach. But many within the league are more than convinced that Gase is ready to take the next step. He is regarded by some as a rising star in the coaching ranks and it was clear that he was going to land a head coaching job this offseason, whether it was in Miami or elsewhere.

He actually should have been a head coach a year earlier. The 49ers were close to hiring Gase last offseason to replace Jim Harbaugh. But their near-deal with Gase fell through and the 49ers instead promoted defensive line coach Jim Tomsula to head coach. That didn’t exactly work out. The 49ers ended up firing Tomsula after only one season and they’re back in the market.

Gase instead followed John Fox, who’d been fired by the Broncos after that team’s quick playoff exit last season, from Denver to Chicago. Gase and Fox coaxed a better-than-expected season out of Bears quarterback Jay Cutler. That further bolstered Gase’s coaching resume after he’d forged a smooth working relationship with quarterback Peyton Manning in Denver.

for some reason, everybody outside of Miami seem to love this hire. I guess it is once bitten, twice shy for Miami.

Good find, Andy. Maske is a really good NFL writer. I have been following his work for awhile. Very knowledgeable and plugged in, even keeled NFL writer.

as a pro-Gase guy I would say he leaves some checkboxes unchecked. but then again how many teams rue overlooking Arians?

His press conference introduction does not inspire confidence by looking lost and saying the same things they all do. Knowing me, and I think I do, all of this kinda seems like it always is with a new guy. I just need to SEE what the guy can do not just hear about it. Talk about a long suffering fan!

We lost Jim Harbaugh to the 49ers and now the 49ers have lost Gase to us. Lets hope we find the same fortune they did.

To be honest there is NOTHING Gase did with the Bears that was so special as to put him in the same category of the good ones.
Like I said, I wanted a coach/coordinator that did wonders without a top 10 QB. Gase is note one of them.

My list of OC:

1.- Mike Shula (Panthers)
2.- Harold Goodwin (Cardinals)
3.- Hue Jackson (Bengals)
4.- Chan Gailey (Jets)
5.- Greg Roman (Bills)

The odds for Gase don't look good because there is nothing he has done that looks really good.

Any of the those 5 on my list has better odds. All of them did amazing things if you consider the QBs they had. Newton was like a 400% better QB without a TOP WR (I think we will regret a LOT not hiring Shulas son), Palmer looked resurected and even better tan ever, Jackson made the ever mediocre Dalton look like a TOP 10 QB and he did some incredible adjustments, Gailey did an amazing job with freaking Fitzpatrick at QB! and finally Roman made the Bills offense the strenght of the team with Taylor at QB and we know 1st) Ryan is NOT an offensive specialist and 2nd) He ruined the defense in one year.

I really hope I am wrong and Gase is the next Don Shula. Hey ... I will be grateful if he is an above average coach. But coming from the 23rd ranked offense that hardly improve under his tenure with Jeffery, Forte, Cutler, Bennet and a so-so OL. I don't like the odds and I DONT LIKE the hire at all!!!

I'm going to stay positive about it and see what Gase can do. We'll get a better sense when he completes his staff hiring.

Adam Gase is not going to be the next Don Shula. No one is ever going to be the next Don Shula. There is only one Don Shula, that's what makes him so special.

The truth is nobody knows whether Adam Gase will be a good head coach or not, but is he qualified for the job? I say yes. So let's give him a shot before dismissing him right away just cause the chances of him being our next Shula are 0.00%.

Would not judge him on that, he had a week of interviews that had to take it's toll.
