The Miami Dolphins have been awarded two waiver claims today, adding added rookie cornerback Sammy Seamster after he was waived by the Baltimore Ravens in the final rounds of roster cuts yesterday, as well as safety Brandian Ross, who started 13 games for the Oakland Raiders last year. Both moves are designed to bolster the depth in the Dolphins' secondary, where starting free safetyReshad Jones will miss the first four weeks of the season serving a suspension for performance enhancing drugs.

Miami released wide receiver Damian Williams and safety Don Jones to make roster space for Ross and Seamster.

Sad to see Damian Williams go.
Hopefully Michael Sam ends up on the same team as Jones.

"Ross started 13 games in 2013, in place of injured strong safety Tyvon Branch. He amassed 75 tackles, two sacks, and forced a fumble. Ross added three pass defenses and recorded a tackle in each game last year. He appeared in 14 games for the Raiders in 2012, with one start.
...

In the beginning, Ross was primarily a special teams player, who worked his way into the rotation at safety. Then with the Branch injury, he was thrust into full time duty. With the increased playing time, Ross showed he still needs development, especially in coverage. Branch should be fully healthy to start next season, so Ross can go back to a situational safety, who can help on special teams."

He might be the primary reason we let Don Jones go.

Ross really struggled with the Raiders. I'm not so sure about swapping Williams for him on the 53.

Our ST kick coverage sucked during the preseason, hence the signing of ST players.

Hard to figure these moves. Ross struggling with Oak is being very kind but, he did well on special teams. Seamster was horrible on special teams in preseason, missing 1 tackles in limited play, had a grade of -1.5 which is bad.

Don't know much about either of these guys. Just hope they ready to play. I could care less about what they did last year. You're a Phone now, lace up and get ready for the Pats.

PFF article on Brandian Ross - basically he's a project who shouldn't be starting games yet, is the upshot. The Raiders signed him off the Packers PS and then - due to injury - asked him to play all over the secondary, in all kinds of packages, so I'm not sure it's a poor reflection on him that some games he got manhandled. But nonetheless, PFF graded him at #85 of 86 safeties in 2013, so I wouldn't expect any miracles. I think there were much better options out there at safety, so I'm a little disappointed. Maybe they were claimed ahead of us....

But while the Raiders have shored up their run defense, the pass defense still leaves a lot to be desired. The Raiders have shown an ability to get pressure on the quarterback through creative blitz patterns. However, when the Raiders were burned on the blitz against the Eagles, they attempted to rely on their front four to get pressure on Nick Foles and without much success.

Without consistent pressure on the quarterback, the secondary suffered massively. Of those who struggled, Brandian Ross stood out as one of the worst. According to Pro Football Focus (PFF), Ross was targeted 10 times in that game and was burned for 9 catches, 146 yards and 4 touchdowns. Ross had a better game against the Giants, but still received a negative grade from Pro Football Focus for his efforts.

Usama Young can play either position while Ross has shown an inability to play either very effectively. Ross is talented and has a lot of potential but the same can be said of Young. The difference is that Young appears more ready to produce results from his potential than Ross does at this point.

With both guys coming up as free agents, the Raiders need to take a longer look at Young. Ross may be worth bringing back, but only at a cheap price. Young, on the other hand, is a guy that may be worth investing a decent contract in. But the only way to tell for sure is to give him more time on the field.

Re-watching the Raider game...Ross is hit-and-miss...literally...he tends to get in plays and shows some instinct, but he doesn't wrap up and misses the tackle...

He also looks really small...

And right after I wrote this, 4:35 of 4th against the Hawks happened. Simple bubble screen right at the 7, cover 1, Ross reads it well...comes up aggressively, hits him at the 6 and flat out fails...guy walks in for a TD...NOT IMPRESSED BY THIS GUY...

I'd have preferred Robert Lester. Physically he's more what we need, imo. Lester cleared waivers and went to the Panthers PS.
