Akil Blount, son of Mel Blount – The Hall of Fame cornerback of the Pittsburgh Steelers, a four time Super Bowl winner and 5x Pro Bowls from 1970-1983, has finally gotten the call.

The former Basketball standout and FAMU football star has signed with the Miami Dolphins as a Unrestricted Free-Agent.

In his 2015 season, the former Rattler tied for first in tackles (75 total tackles) had two interceptions, two touchdowns, and was selected to the 2016 NFLPA Collegiate Bowl. Blount became a leader on defense for FAMU.

At 6’3″ 243LBS, Blount has the NFL size to play inside or outside linebacker. His speed, solid base, and quick feet from years of basketball, have helped Blount excel in coverage.

While tape is limited, In watching his performance at the 2015 Florida Classic, Blount displays next-level instincts, quickness to diagnose a play, and body control which could help him become a 3-down LB.

The Dolphins lack of Linebackers were concerning with none selected in the 2016 Draft, but with solid UFA picks Miami could be developing young cap friendly depth at the LB position. (Zach Vigil, Neville Hewitt, Mike Hull)

Blount stated in a recent interview that the Dolphins plan to use him as an outside linebacker, while LB Mike Hull will man the inside position. Both are expected to be solid contributors on special teams.

Saw this in another article as well....

"Like his father, Blount excelled on the defensive side of the ball. But unlike his dad, his future wasn’t in the secondary. After recording an astounding 30 sacks in his senior year at Linsly, Blount was a gangly 195-pound prospect.

But his hard work in the weight room paid off. He eventually was named winner of the “Iron Rattlers Award” for being pound-for-pound the best conditioned athlete at Florida A&M as he increased his weight to 240 pounds. He improved his vertical jump to 37 inches. His bench press maxed out at more than 400 pounds."

6-3, 240 lbs, son of a Hall Of Famer, 30 sacks his Senior year in high school, and he also did 30 reps of 225lbs at his pro day......i.e. this kid is strong.

Very interesting prospect. Good luck to him!

Love it.

And i still say, watch for Mike Hull. The last staff just couldnt develope players BEGGING to be coached up like hull and vigil. Both these kids ard tremendous ball players but the coaching staff almost had an attitude when ever they had to play them!! Both are fresh clay in a creative d coaches hands. I think joseph just might be that guy. I have a good feeling about him that he is going to be a great d/c in the nfl.

Thought Jeremy Cash was the best non-drafted player by far. Will fit in nicely with the Panthers, preferred it be with the Dolphins.

Didn't see any team pick up Ian Seau (Junior's nephew) out of Nevada who could be a pass rush specialist.

Nice project player, no where near ready IMO.

I kinds wish he stuck with playing running back tbh.

It's very hard to develop linebackers once in the NFL. Rare to see raw linebackers make it in the NFL. Very technical position that depends on quick insticts. Those instincts take time to develop.

I always found it hilarious people here thought dion Jordan and chris McCain could make that jump to linebacker.

The Louisville lb looks like a reshad Jones type of playmaker for sub packages if use those.

FAMU is just not a great program or good level for football. I'm not saying that the kid stood out among poor competition, just that I wouldn't get too excited until he laces them up with guys who are used to big, fast, and strong coming at them from all directions.

Totally agree with you on Hull.. the kid should be inside and he should be starting!! hopefully this staff gives him every opportunity to win the job, he will not disappoint!!

You think Mike Hull should start over Kiko??

Additional info: Linsly is a small private school here in Wheeling. He didn't exactly face the most fearsome competition in high school ... they basically play a bunch of "A" size schools. It is a good program, but they don't run with the big boys (even here in WV )

That being said, I'm pulling for him.

What has he EVER done to lead you to believe this? I root for Hull and all of these other kids, but... come on.
