After three weeks of the NFL season, the Miami Dolphins defense was 30th in the league in points allowed, had just given up five touchdowns to the Kansas City Chiefs, and players were privately grumbling about the scheme.
Six weeks later, the Dolphins are third in scoring defense (18.9), third in total defense, first in yards per play at 4.7, second in passing yards per game, fourth in sacks per game at 3.1 and third in completion percentage against. The run defense, which yielded 174 yards to the Chiefs that day without Jamaal Charles, has improved to 12th in the league.
If the numbers don't say it, I will: This Dolphins defense is one of the best in the NFL, if not the best.
As they ready for a big game at Detroit -- against a team with another top defense -- fresh off their dominating 37-0 shutout of the San Diego Chargers, I thought it a good time to take a hard look at this Dolphins defense.
What I saw was a team that is physical enough inside to help choke off the run, has great edge rushers in Cameron Wake and the underrated Olivier Vernon, has active linebackers in Koa Misi and Jelani Jenkins, feisty corners in Cortland Finnegan and Brent Grimes and two safeties who are interchangeable, both with range.
It is a nice mix of players, who make it easy for coordinator Kevin Coyle to call games because he has two corners who can play man coverage when needed and the four-man pressures that don't require a lot of blitzing.
