According to a league source, new Miami Dolphins coach Nick Saban intends to hire a replay official with similar duties to Hill's. But Saban -- who has contacted the NFL for a pool of retired officials -- is seeking someone to handle a bigger workload.

Hill's other duties included overseeing referees to work practices; monitoring penalty tendencies of players and meeting with Gibbs's staff to deconstruct calls. Because no other team had hired a former referee in such a capacity -- Hill was an NFL referee the previous five seasons, and worked during the 2004 Super Bowl -- the Redskins received permission from the league office.

It looks like Saban is looking for any edge he can find.Which player or group you think this will benefit the most ?

Ah, no player or group. This is for challenges during the season I'm sure. Rather then wasting them, Saban gets the yes or no from his guy before throwing the flag.

I think the o-line needs the most help in the penalty department. After that, Special Teams, which at times, seemed to clip on every kick return.

Nothing like those drive killing, stupid, penalties that gives us all heartburn. Very smart move by Saban to bring in a guy to help out on those and also to help out with other areas during the game like replay management. I love what Saban is doing for our team!

this is another awesome move by saban...its like when the pats beat the raiders in the snow game...bellichick said he knew it was the tuck rule when the rest of us thought it was a fumble...this guy should know when to challenge and when not to...anything to give us an edge...i think we win 4 more games more than last year already just because of saban...he is very thorough...huizenga finally did something right...

I guess he's not used to replay.

Well....obviously...no but what does that have to do with anything?

Nothing, just means the guy is straight out of college. Jeez, people are so quick to defend Saban even when he wasn't attacked.

wasn't defending him, just pointing out the irrevelance of the statement.

More evidence that Nick will do whatever needs to be done to gain an advantage, put the team in a position to succeed, and leaving no stone unturned in having this team ready to play. It's more than just a replay official, like the article says, he wants to see players tendencies as far as who commits the most penalties and what kind it is and how often it is to try and fix it.. Good Move by Nick.

I like it, it gives him a slightly less biased opinion in the booth for challenges, better organization for practices and one more thing to focus on when disecting the tape. If this person can eliminate even 2-3 penalties a game and help win a few challenges, that yardage and turnover ratio will benifit the team greatly. Very good move coach. Plus it doesn't make him look like a fool out there when he challenges some of the rules as he's got a guy backing him up as to how to handle the situation.

I really like this.

Again and again Saban is showing a 110% commitment to every aspect of this team. He's a perfectionist, and that's really showing in regards to how he runs the team. Every single aspect, even the refs at practice etc, has to be perfect. I really like the way he's managing this team.

I like this. Me and my dad always talked about having someone up in the booth only looking at replays to determine whether or not they should be challenged. I didn't know if a position like that existed or not, well this article answers my question.
