And you'll recall the end results were not what the Dolphins wanted and did not compare favorably with what was happening at other NFL stops. So today, as at the end of the 2015 season, Wake's scheduled cap value for 2016 is $9.8 million. And that is simply too high for a 34-year-old player coming off a season-ending Achilles rupture last October -- one who may not be 100 percent at the start of training camp and may not be a full time player early on during the 2016 season or perhaps ever again.
But, according to a team source, the failure inability to come to terms with Wake on a restructure, that may or may not have included a request for a salary cut, may not be the last word on the subject. The Dolphins have not closed the door at taking another run at this issue in order to exact a cap savings from Wake this year which they can, per NFL cap rules, carry over to next year if it helps the team achieve a cap surplus at the end of 2016.
So the Dolphins don't feel the book on this matter is necessarily closed.
What does that mean?
Well, the team might try to work with Wake again just prior to or just after the draft. That could help the team gain cap space for the post May 12 run at a couple of free agents the Dolphins might decide to purse. The Dolphins had $19.9 million in salary cap space as of Monday, per the NFL Players Association so it's not like they are hurting and need the savings.
But it is merely good stewardship to try to save where possible and, again, the Wake deal, which is in its final year, begs addressing.
In my opinion, it is more likely the Dolphins wait until just before the end of training camp to try to adjust the contract again. Remember, base salaries are guaranteed if a player is on the 53-man roster the first week of the season so that is kind of the deadline the Dolphins have if they still wish to work some sort of pay cut into the formula.

Just leave him alone... He's been underpaid his whole career to stay in Miami, just let him have his final year.... That contract was way better for the team than for Wake...

Agree he has given us more for less. We shouldn't disrespect him at this point. There are something's Analytics don't get.

Yeah but it doesn't hurt to casually try.

Why? Don't we have like nearly $20m in space after rookie deals? Eat this contract this year (lord knows he's earned it) and we should've eaten Suh's big year too. Is there $20m of talent left out there?

Wake has been great for us especially considering we picked him up out of the CFL for a very low contract. Then he took a pretty favorable contract later on......but I'm not paying him 10 million this year. No way, No how. I would rather see him walk than pay 10 million. With so many other needs at LB, CB, RB and not to mention the the terrible guards we have poised to start. Imagine how great our oline would be with 10 mil towards the guards. Not saying that is what they should do but I would not pay him 10

With the cap space we have, even taking the rookie contracts into account, we still have enough cap space to make moves for any players that are cut or are currently free agents. Unless we are going to give Wake an extension, say add another year, and spread the money out over two years, then frankly I'd just leave him alone because he's a free agent next season. Pay him, then maybe he signs an extension next year for a reasonable price.

You are not finding 10 million worth of guards at this point.

They are taking a page out of the Patsies playbook, they now have a set price for him at his age and position and it is a take it or leave it. I highly doubt there is any negotiating going on.

Would be great to get that cap number down + ensure he retires a Dolphin

No other positions either, they tried he said 'no', doubt he says yes unless you give him more gurantees/years. He holds the cards at this point unless you want to release him and create another hole.

If Im Wake I stay here for a team thats not contending and Im gettiing a little over paid or they release me and I take a little leas to play for a contending team.

if Wakes cut does that affect comp picks?
