Dolphins | McMichael frustrated with blocking role
Fri, 15 Sep 2006 20:42:39 -0700
Armando Salguero, of the Miami Herald, reports Miami Dolphins TE Randy McMichael was frustrated with the blocking role he was used in during the Week 1 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. McMichael said, "I'll give you the true answer: It's frustrating. Of course you want to go out and make plays, and I want to catch balls. But there's only one ball, and sometimes your number is called to help the offensive line so that [QB] Daunte Culpepper can get the ball off." McMichael is confident his opportunities to catch the ball will increase because offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey called several plays designed for McMichael against the Steelers. "That's one thing about Coach Mularkey as the offensive coordinator that's different from past coordinators. He did call some plays for me. But the defense stopped the plays at the particular time. I can't complain about the play-calling. And when they call the play for me to stay in and block, I have to do that, too."

During the Steelers game, Madden mentioned that Mularky said we would either be spreading out 4 wide and quickly getting rid of the ball or, keeping in maximum protection for the routes downfield. I don't think Randy has anything to worry about. He'll get his catches.

randy will probably have a good game sunday like he did last year

i heard him on sirius and mcmike said nothing to the effect of that...he said he will play the role he is needed whether it be blocking, or catching passes...basically

"Boo hoo" for McMichael. He's probably our most inconsistent offensive weapon, I mean, has he ever shown up for the second half of the season? No. It's far more important to get the Culpepper/Chambers connection going. McMichael will get his 40-50 touches, but we need the extra protection at times.

If he's a real leader, then he'll understand that..

It would be nice to have an offensive line that could hold it's own so Mcmike could be more of a threat in the passing game. When Willie Roaf went out in KC last year Gonzales had to stay in to block. I hope we draft the next Willie Roaf next year!!!

I said this the day the Phins hired Mike Mularkey. His offense as good as it is, does not feature the TE. Randy McMichael should expect no more that about 35 catches this year

he is also included in the player interviews on miamidolphins.com....and they asked him specifically about this...and he said he will do whatever is asked of him.

Dont take McMike's words out of context, and theres no reason to trash Randy over this.

He said that his plays were called and they were stopped at the time by Pitt Defense, and that he understands he has to step up and block when hes called upon to do so. He was not complaining and if your making it look out to be this then your aparently just seeking for drama.

That's an uh, illogical conclusion. He's never had much in the way of a TE, that doesnt mean he doesnt want to use one as an offensive weapon or will underuse him.

Saban knows Miami didnt do that good a job of letting McMichael play to his strengthes last season, which is why they tried to find another non-linemen blocker. The goal is to have the 2nd TE or FB stay in, and let guys like McMichael and Ronnie Brown get into the recieving gamem ore.

The "frustration" comes from not winning and wanting to do more. That is the competitor in him. I would hope he is frustrated. But there was nothing in the article, beyond the headline, that suggested anything more than that.
