Dolphins might add another running back

No **** really you played ball with Emmit?
We have a few larger needs than RB on this team, but I played HS Football with Emmitt Smith at Escambia in Pensacola. Trent Richardson broke a lot of his records there, this guy is the REAL DEAL. It would be tempting if he is there!

This has Ryan Grant written all over it....

Sign Peyton Hillis, he is a beast and is a free agent and would give the Dolphins a thunder and lightening tandom with Reggie Bush. Tough hard nosed runner we haven't seen since Ricky Williams and Larry Csonka hey days.

Yeah, well, Emmit, in the Pro's had the luxory of having an all-pro line in front of him...the entire line.

His YBC were ridiculous, and YAC were far from being great...... I'm just saying........

Bro, Emmitt did it everywhere he went from Pop Warner to the NFL. He did everything at a high level from running to pass blocking to catching. He was rugged and played hurt. How did the Cowboys do the year he held out at the beginning of the season and after he came back? How did other RB's do behind that same line? Anybody who doesn't recognize that he is one of the best to ever play the game is either clueless or jealous because he is the NFL all time leading rusher and they like some other back more.....I'm just saying.

I did, I was JV when he was Varsity but JV and Varsity practiced together and I handed off to him during practice. His brother Erik was on my team and a good RB for HS, but didn't get a scholarship or anything. His other brother Emory did well in HS and played at Clemson before being on the Practice Squads of Dallas and Green Bay. Emmitt ran for over 8800 yards in HS and led us to 2 State titles.

hate on ireland but he rebuilt our running game n one year. Don shula couldnt rebuild it for 20

LaMichael James, Oregon....if he drops into the 3rd round.

Running backs take a lot of pounding, some extra depth sounds like good policy.

Isn't our third string runner a former 1,000 yard back? Sounds like depth to me. I'd much rather address positions where we don't even have a good #1 or 2.

madden!!!! find anything better than what we have. sign every FA, draft every prospect!

No way we take a RB in the first round, even if Richardson is there. To many other needs and we already have Bush and Thomas. No one can give Thomas crap about last year. He was not the featured back. He showed a lot of promise with the limited carries he had. Oh yeah, how did Ingram do??

I think we should move Lex to FB and let Clay be listed as TE. They can essentially play the same roles that they already do

You are missing my point.

RT is a MUCH bigger issue than RB for us. Without that Mauling RT, we are spinning our wheels. We already have a 1000 yard back and top 5 draft pick. He and Richardson can't play at the sametime. We won't be spending a top 10 pick on a runningback..... I hope.

Another thing, I already posted in a parallel thread where the runninbacks for the final 4 teams in the playoffs were picked. Exactly 1 were 1st round picks. Ricky. One was a 2nd rounder in Ray Rice, and one was a 3rd rounder in Frank Gore.

The rest were way way way down the draft including 7th rounders and UDFA (Both of New England's RB's are UDFA....of course 18 of their 53 are UDFA's)

My intent wasn't as much to discredit Emmitt, although, I still say his NFL numbers are ballooned by his YBC and YAC, I was pointing out that without a Frontline, nobody not named Barry Sanders can do jack-squat.

Agreed. Smith was very fortunate to play for the Cowboys in that era. Unlike Barry Sanders who was a MUCH better player than Smith.
Smith has the yardage record, but those of us older fans who have been watching football for decades can tell you that in addition to Jim Brown there have been many running backs a lot better than Smith who had to carry their teams. Gale Sayers, OJ Simpson, Earl Campbell, Eric Dickerson and Barry Sanders were all MUCH better than Smith. Guys like Curt Warner (the Seattle RB), Billy Simms, Thurman Thomas, Marshall Faulk and Eddie George were at least as good as Smith.
With respect to Daniel Thomas, I wasn't high on the pick, but he showed he could be a good back when he was healthy. I personally think his hamstring injury was mis-handled by the trainers and coaching staff. Hamstring injuries are tricky and have to be given time to heal. This nonsense of playing him every other week was irresponsible. He should have been rested for 3-4 weeks when the injury occurred. Andre Johnson missed most of the season because of a nagging hamstring injury.

You could make that statement on just about every great running back. Most of the other greats didn't have a Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin, Jay Novacek and several pro bowlers on the O-line.
OJ Simpson, Earl Cambell, Barry Sanders and Eric Dickerson were the offenses for their respective teams. In my persoanl opinion, I have never seen a back as scary as Earl Campbell. Pop in a tape of his highlights. Big, fast, elusive and punishing. Think of a back as big as Larry Csonka with the athletic ability of a Ricky Williams.

Yep, I think you have categorized with perspective very very well. I can't argue a single one of these and where they fall.
Anybody that ever saw, on a regular basis, both Smith and Sanders play know exactly what the score was. Can you imagine if Barry Sanders had 6 perennial pro bowlers in front of him, (I'm including Darryl Johnston) and Aikman, Irvin and Novacek taking pressure off of him. His numbers would be simply untouchable. (.) PERIOD!!!

Not a knock on Smith, as the guys you have lumped him in with are all INCREDIBLE Runningbacks!!!
Before he blew it away on dope, Ricky was in that class as well.
