Round 1 - Jake Long, OT, Michigan
I think we will try to trade down (obviously), but Im not sure we have a dance partner right now. Long will finally solidify the LT position and will be one of the last pieces to your young and potentially very good offensive line. I gave consideration to Chris Long here, but I think that looking at what Joe Thomas did for the Browns, Long could have an instant impact on not only the line, but on our offense as a whole. And who among us doesnt want to see what Beck can do when he is upright, or what Ronnie can do with some real holes? Plus, one last point, our division has some pretty beefy front sevens.
Round 2 (a) - Reggie Smith, S, Oklahoma
Yes, a safety before a corner. With the word that Hill and Worrell wont even be ready for week one, I think its time to take them out of the equation. We resigned Bell, but he too is coming off of a serious injury, and has excelled in what Saban coined the "Star" position in nickel situations, where he can take advantage of his playmaking ability. Smith will team with Jason Allen to provide us with a young tandem of safeties, who will hopefully a) allow us to mix up what we do up front, and b) protect our mediocre corners, beyond Will Allen.
Round 2 (b) - Quentin Groves, DE/OLB, Auburn
Bill gets his pass-rushing OLB to team with his new mentors, JT and JP. We pass on Chris Long, but manage to grab who I think is going to be a helluva player in this league. He has the speed and athleticism to excel in this scheme and be a poor man's Demarcus Ware. To start, he will come in on obvious passing downs, and spell the two oldies. Who knows, he could pull a David Harris and be starting by week eight.
Round 3 - Charles Godfrey, CB, Iowa
We address the CB position and could afford to wait because this is a real deep group. While somewhat raw, he offers tremendous athleticism and comes from a fine program. While likely not a starter on day one, he should at the very least be an upgrade over Andre Goodman for this year, and should start across from Will Allen by 2009.
Round 4 - Brad Cottam, TE, Tennessee
Wouldnt be my choice, but I think Parcells has his eye on this former Volunteer. There is no doubt in my mind we pick a TE somewhere in the draft, based on our need and Parcells' history, but I am still torn. While his past shows that he favors all-around guys who can be big-play threats, and block well, there arent a ton of those guys in this group. It seems like either you're a great receiver, or a great blocker. Something tells me a WR in a TE's body like Keller or Finley wont be the pick, to many fans' (myself included) dismay. But then again, he could surprise us, since we have Ryan and Peele on board. I leave the pick as Cottam for now, but Finley got serious consideration here.
Round 6 - Jason Shirley, DT, Fresno State
A monster of a man at 330 pounds, we go for a NT simply because I dont see a 3-4 DE getting much playing time behind Holliday, Wright, Starks and Roth. Soliai was a disappointment, and he'll need to show something in TC to make a good impression on the new staff, or risk being gone. Why? He doesnt seem to have that fire and intensity. We'll see, maybe new Dline coach Kacy Rodgers will be able to turn him into a player. I believed at the time we took him that he was a project, and that turned out to be the case. In any case, Shirley is a pure space-eater who will potentially backup Ferguson and Soliai, and at worst, find himself on the inactive list for the year (or PS). Can never have enough 3-4 NTs, such a critical position in this defense.
Round 7 - Kevin O'Connell, QB, San Diego State
Thought long and hard about not taking a QB, but I just dont see it. Plus, I knew many of you would be up in arms :) He will compete with Ireland/Parcells favorite Matt Baker to be the #3 this year. Could be the next Tony Romo, or the next Jordan Palmer. I contemplated a big LB like a Roderick Johnson, but in the end went with the gun slinger from SDS.
These things are real tough. There will be no perfect mock, because we just have so many needs. Still, taking into account what we did (and didnt) do in FA, this is my first try. What do you think?
