Running back Knowshon Moreno continues to make steady progress, and on Monday he had his most extension participation in practice this summer.
“I’ve still got to get into that football shape,” Moreno said. “I feel really good out there, cutting and doing the things I have to do.”
Moreno said the next step is getting used to game speed again. Another step he took Monday was being involved in contact.
Monday’s practice was the third for Moreno since he was activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list. Moreno sat out the preseason opener against Atlanta and said he didn’t know whether he would play against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Saturday night.
“He looked better today,” Head Coach Joe Philbin said. “He did some things well yesterday in practice and we’ll get in there and look at film here in a couple of minutes, but I think he’s definitely making progress.”
Quarterback Ryan Tannehill wasn’t particularly happy with wide receiver Brandon Gibson after what happened Friday night in the preseason opener.
Oh, it had nothing to do with Gibson’s pass catching or route running, but rather a touchdown celebration Tannehill felt was underwhelming.
“Sub-par,” Tannehill said. “I told him I expected better out of him. After watching tape, I came to him, I said, hey, we’re going to get you in the end zone again this next weekend, you’ve got to bring us something better to the table. That was embarrassing.”
When asked whether he could have done better, Tannehill quickly replied: “I didn’t say I can do better. I didn’t say I can do better. I just said I needed more from him.”
Running back Damien Williams, who sat out practice Sunday after being injured late in the preseason opener, was back at practice Monday.
Philbin addressed reports of the Dolphins working out veteran quarterbacks by saying the team has worked out one or more players almost every single day since training camp started. ... Perhaps the most impressive play of practice came in a goal-line drill when wide receiver Damian Williams jumped high in the corner of the end zone to snag a fade from quarterback Matt Moore despite tight coverage from Jamar Taylor

“It’s been good. It’s helped me get the ball out faster, have more velocity on some of my throws and just be more consistent. That’s the biggest key is consistency in the footwork from a quarterback to make accurate throws. You look back at some of the incompletions I had in the past, it was usually inconsistent footwork. That was his big key coming in to say we’re going to get your feet right and then everything else will take care of itself.” — QB Ryan Tannehill on new offensive coordinator Bill Lazor working to improve his footwork
