Miami Dolphins: Morning practice report (Monday)
> Posted by Mike Berardino on October 19, 2009 11:16 AM

Matt Roth STILL isn't practicing.
Guess Miami Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland doesn't have as much pull with the NFL office as hoped.

See, by rule, Roth can't start practicing until Tuesday, which will mark the end of the sixth league week with Roth on the reserve/non-football injury list. The Dolphins were hoping -- with Ireland as the point man -- to get Roth practicing by today due to the fact they were coming off a bye week and won't practice Tuesday.
No dice.
I still wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see the Dolphins trade Roth by Tuesday's 4 p.m. deadline. In order to do that, of course, they would have to move Roth onto the 53-man roster, which would force them to expose another player (Kory Sheets?) to waivers.
But if that move would result in a top-shelf WR like Dwayne Bowe coming here, who cares?
Bowe, by the way, is all set to come back to his native South Florida for Roth, a second-round pick and a fifth-round pick. At least that's what some joker changed his Wikipedia page to read over the weekend.
Wouldn't it be amazing if that's exactly what ended up happening? Maybe that's the next wave of reality in this ever-changing world: Wiki-ing your way to a desired outcome.
On other notes from this morning's practice, which was conducted outdoors in sunshine and a glorious breeze:
() Joey Porter (right hamstring) practiced lightly during the time the media was allowed to watch. He sat out a number of reps among the OLBs, taking his mental reps, and wore a compression sleeve on his right leg.
() Roth went back inside the bubble to continue his rehab work after stretching, then emerged (sans helmet) with 22 seconds left in the official media viewing period.
() Akin Ayodele (back) practiced at what appeared to be full bore.
() Channing Crowder (ankle) wore compression sleeves on both legs but was out there practicing.
() Lots of work on short routes in the passing game. Greg Camarillo made a nice one-handed grab of a quick slant that was off target from a coach. Ted Ginn Jr., did the same on an off-target pass on a comeback route.
() Chad Henne badly underthrew Ginn on a deep out. Bounced it, actually. Maybe this was further evidence of what Tony Sparano terms "location issues" for the young QB. Or maybe Ginn's route was that far off.
() Nice pass breakup by Vontae Davis on a Henne to Ginn post pattern in the end zone. Sean Smith broke up a Ginn curl route a little later. Rooks will have to come up big this Sunday against that high-powered Saints offense.
() Henne came back to whistle a completion to Davone Bess (over Will Billingsley) on a deep out.
() Gibril Wilson, in press coverage on speedy practice squadder James Robinson, picks up the flag for PI. Pat White on the throw. Wilson can't afford penalties like that on Sunday. The whole secondary can't, really, after piling up 84 yards of penalties (on four calls) against the Jets.
() Nate Jones, the nickel back, with a nice diving PBU on Brian Hartline's out route.
So, what are your biggest concerns about this Saints offense as it comes off a 48-point explosion against a Giants D that had been ranked No. 1 in the league? And how worrisome is it to you that nobody has come within 14 points of the Saints through their first five games?
Does that make them vulnerable to the Dolphins' drain-the-clock approach? Or does that just make them scary good?
Saints, by the way, enter Monday's play ranked No. 1 in the NFL in total offense: fourth on the ground, seventh through the air. They are ninth in total defense: fifth against the run, tied for 14th against the pass.
Interesting to note the highest current NFL rank against the run of the five teams the Dolphins have faced so far is 14th by the Colts. The others are all 21st or lower: Jets (21st), Falcons (23rd), Chargers (29th) and Bills (32nd/dead last).
Another prove-it-to-me week for an offensive line that has started to grab the attention of the gold standard in Dolphins history.
Dolphins ranks in those categories through Sunday: 15th in the league in total offense (1st rushing, 26th passing) and 10th in total defense (third vs. the rush, 18th vs. the pass).

I think Henne is a gammer, and not as good of a practice player.

funny you should mention that stat. Obviously you have to take that stat with a grain of salt, because those teams would rank better against the run IF they hadn't have played against us ROFL. :thanks:
