we all pretty much knew this, but here is an article from pft
Primarily a 3-4 team for the better part of the last decade, the Dolphins are undergoing a fairly dramatic defensive shift under first-year coordinator Kevin Coyle. Coyle brought from Cincinnati to Miami a 4-3 alignment, with an emphasis on pressuring opposing quarterbacks.
“Obviously, applying pressure to the quarterback and disrupting the rhythm of the passing game is a huge part of defense in the NFL these days,” coach Joe Philbin explained, per Ben Volin of the Palm Beach Post. “The scheme should be flexible enough that it takes advantage of what our guys can do.”
And the Dolphins believe the defensive front-seven members in place will adequately fill the newly assigned roles. Outside linebacker Cameron Wake is now a Dwight Freeney-style right defensive end. Jared Odrick, a “five technique” end in Miami’s old 3-4, is now a 4-3 left end who will likely kick to defensive tackle in sub-packages. Randy Starks and Tony McDaniel, formerly defensive ends, are now full-time defensive tackles.
Third-round rookie Olivier Vernon is a wildcard. He has explosive edge-rushing potential, and Volin says he’ll likely replace Odrick at end in nickel packages.
Volin expects Wake (pictured) to be the biggest beneficiary of the new pressure-based scheme as he’s “going back home” to his natural position. Odrick is on board with that:
“He bends better than anybody in the league, in terms of getting around the edge and to the quarterback.”
And that’ll be the goal of the Dolphins’ new defense.

Geez... don't all the current defensive packages say they emphasize pressure these days?

The new scheme had better get more pressure on the QB because I'm still concerned about our safeties and our LB coverage.

Def. think having Wake coming off the edge will be monster.

RE - Wake
DT - Starks
DT - Soliai
LE - Odrick

I mean damn, O-lines can bearly contrain Soliai in a 3-4 scheme, feel sorry for who ever has to block him 1 on 1.

Wake already has been coming off the edge for a couple of years. On nearly every passing down Wake had his hands on the ground and was giving OT's fits after the snap. I already know how Wake is going to perform because he's not going to really be doing anything much different when it comes to his specialty(getting to the QB). Guys like Odrick and Solai though I am very very interested in seeing how they play in this defense.

Def. agree, though it will be a plus Wake off the edge on EVERY play. Love Wake but he has been a liability in pass coverage. Starks, Soliai and Odrick....man.

CANT WAIT!

Just hope Dansby, Burrnett and Misi can make the switch to 4-3 base defense.

Fully agree! Big Paul is an incredible athlete which I have always considered was being wasted as a 3-4 NT. I am thrilled with this change and believe our personal was better suited for a 4-3 defense. I also can't wait to see Odrick at LE as well.

That starting front four looks scary good on paper. On passing downs and other sub-packages it sounds like the line could shift to this:

RE: Wake
DT: Starks/McDaniel
DT: Odrick
LE: Vernon

It's pretty much pick your poision. Who do you double team, Wake or Big Paul?

I don't like the fit of A lot of our players in this new Sceme

Wake, should transition but will be run at a lot by opposing O's

Are DT situation is all right PS is a run plugger but won't bring any pass rush, Odrick is much more a 3-4 DE than a DT(I bet we try and trade him at the deadline or next offseason, he's just not a fit) and Starks is Avg

we also have a big hole at LE

Overall there are going to be a lot of growing pains and I don't agree with the switch of schemes

Paul is good but the problem is the rest of our Div already has a player that can handle him 1 on 1

Jets Mangold
Buffalo Wood or Levitre
Not so much Koppen but he gets to practice against Wilfork who is far better than Paul

I'm not concerned about how well Wake will get to the QB in a 4 man front on passing downs. I'm more interested in seeing how well he does against the run in a 4 man front. I think the comparison to Freeney is a good one since everyone knew the Colts couldn't stop the run worth a crap and that team had to play with a lead for Freeney to be effective and Freeney has 20 lbs on Wake.

It's true that all defensive packages emphasize pressure, but the difference in whether they work or not is whether they have the personnel to make their scheme work correctly. It's not that teams that don't get a lot of sacks don't emphasize pressure, it's that their personnel/packages are not a good fit. The most important aspect of our new scheme isn't that it emphasizes pressure, it's that it incorporates a flexibility that can best take advantage of the skills our players have.

I just want to say in our final 10 games we only allowed 17 points per game. A defense that no one talked about but was quite possibly the best defense during the final 10 weeks of the season. people, our defense is already top 5 and everyone is in their prime. Vontae Davis had 4 ints and was possibly the best corner in the east the final 8 weeks! ****, did anyone see what he did to santonio during the final game of the season?

It's a good point, but since things are changing, it only speaks to the fact that we have a decent amount of talent on this defense. Were they overachieving with Nolan? Underachieving? How Coyle uses that talent is a total wildcard. Could be the best defense in the league, or the worst.

Wake should be fine on run downs, the Colts rarely had players with talent like Starks and Soliai eating blockers for Freeney to make plays in the run game. Wake is the last guy i'm worried about in this defense.

I think a healthy, in shape Dansby will benefit tremendously from the attention placed on the front 4 but i'm worried for Misi and Burnett. I was shocked Miami didn't draft more linebackers but when you switch schemes on both sides of the ball there are so many holes you can fill with a single draft.
