[h=3]Miami Dolphins should learn the hard lesson of drafting injured players[/h]
"Durability is an ability in the NFL, too."

Bill Parcells told me that a couple of years ago and when I repeated it to one of the Miami Dolphins new defensive coaches, his face lit up and said, "I like that. I have to remember that."

Yeah, let's hope there is a long memory of that within every sector of the Dolphins building as the personnel department, coaching staff and others go through the process of studying prospects, setting up the Miami draft board, and laying out a strategy for conducting the 2016 NFL draft.

The reason the Dolphins need that memory is because it would recollect how the drafting of injured players, or players with medical red flags, has significantly hurt the Dolphins in recent years and, indeed, even dating back decades.

Simply, it has not worked in the Dolphins favor. It has been a tremendous hindrance to what this team has ostensibly tried to accomplish with the draft and that is improve the team immediately.

The data?

Take the 2015 draft. First round draft pick DeVante Parker came to the Dolphins with an injury history, being that he had undergone foot surgery his final year at Louisville and missed part of that season as a result. The Dolphins knew this. Dolphins doctors checked this. And the Dolphins picked him No. 14 overall.

I understand the philosophy, but what is the guy trying to say. DON'T draft an injured player? Or is it don't draft them very high? He'd really stay away from Jack at #13?

He hurts his case with Parker and Clay as examples. Yeah, both had injuries but hx shows the picks are/should be good picks. D Thomas? That was a wasted pick injury or not.

Yatil Green? Best I can find, his injury hx was groin and hammy. Nothing about his knees.

I agree players with injury hx have some risk and I'm particularly concerned about the injury hx of FAs, That said, Green was still a top prospect in spite of injury just as Jack is now. Yes, injuries are a factor, but a philosophy of avoiding prospects with injury hx isn't the answer.

I agree. They also need to stop drafting so many bad players.

So does he think Devante Parker was a bad pick? If he wasn't hurt he probably wouldn't have been there when we picked, we lost about a half season of what could be a long term career as our number 1 wr. Seems worth it to me.

I'm sure the thought is Parker is an exception to the rule.

long term career doesnt mean long term career in miami. We pick up these injured young guys and by the time they really see the field and start producing they are on the last year of their contract and we dont resign them. Hopefully we get Parker for the full season and hopefully he lasts past his rookie contract but I wont hold my breath on either

This blog is STUPID! Almost EVERY player playing football has an injury history. It's the nature of the sport. I don't know many players that made it all the way through 3 years of College
( Including Pee Wee and High School) without sustaining an injury! If teams followed Armando's philosophy, there wouldn't be many players to choose from.

In free agency, there are significant bargains to be had signing players with a injury history.

and trading picks

And trading back to draft bad and/or mediocre players (which unfortunately equates to starter too often on this team).

I also wonder, did Bill Parcells EVER truly command a SUCCESSFUL draft? I know he ran away from the Pats because Kraft was smart enough to not let him choose the players, and his drafts here along with that turd he left behind to do his bidding were garbage. Bill Parcells the HC was a successful guy, but I can't think of a time/organization where Bill Parcells the personnel/GM/drafting guy was successful.

I agree to a degree. Players get injured playing the game, if you're going to eliminated adding players who have been injured you're going to miss out on a lot of good players. Plus, since you know players are going to be injured at some point or another, it helps to know what their history of recovery looks like. I wouldn't draft players whose careers are in doubt because of a major injury, but if it's an injury that 90% of the player who have suffered from it recover from than I wouldn't be to worried about it.

Yea I can agree with that. The only problem is....... the damn doctor don't seem to always know the answer to whether or not its a career threatening injury or something the player can come back from. Whose the quack doctor that told Saban Dante Culpepper's new was less of a concern than drew brees's shoulder? SMDH

If you can't trust the doctors... how can you make informed decisions?

The statement is correct, regardless if someone worked out. Way to much stock in injured people. They need to stop. It's the worst part of the draft trade they made, because they just won't stop taking "maybe they will recover" players.
