Ndamukong Suh has long been regarded as one of the dirtiest players in the NFL, but Miami Dolphins coach Joe Philbin said Suh's history as a repeat offender of the league's discipline policy was a non-issue with the team in free agency.

"I think some of those incidents occurred a long time ago and obviously players learn from situations as I think he mentioned and so what we're really focused on is his contributions and his performance and his leadership as a Miami Dolphin," Philbin said Tuesday at the NFL owners meetings. "I think he's at a little different stage in his career now, but certainly those are things that are important. I think he realizes that and we realize that."

Suh was suspended two games in 2011 for stomping on the arm of then-Green Bay Packers lineman Evan Dietrich-Smith and he had a second suspension repealed last season for intentionally stepping on the leg of Aaron Rodgers.
Philbin, the Packers offensive coordinator at the time of Suh's first stomp, said he's "comfortable" with Suh's discipline history and that the three-time all-pro's production on the field made him a must-have in free agency.

"He's quick, he's strong, he's tough, he can make plays, can make negative plays, create negative plays," Philbin said. "I think one thing on defense that you're always looking to do is back the offense up and so he's a guy that throughout the course of his career he's done that.

"He's a very durable player. He's somebody that you have to think about. You're sitting there on Tuesday night and you're game-planning things, so how are you going to pass protect? Are you going to run away from him, are you going to run to him, you going to double team, you going to try to cut him, you going to try to influence him? I think he's a guy that you have to give a lot of consideration to in the matchups."
Among those Philbin talked to about Suh was Vanderbilt strength coach James Dobson, who worked with Philbin for four seasons at Iowa and was Suh's strength coach at Nebraska.

"You want to get comfortable and so you want to talk to people that you trust and you believe in," Philbin said. "We had a real good conversation. He had talked about how Ndamukong had just visited him at Vanderbilt University and they had just spent time together and he spoke very, very positively about Ndamukong. Not only as a player – I think all of us can watch the tape and see the impactful plays. But he talked very positively about his work ethic, his character and so forth."

Not criticizing the OP, but what else are they going to say? Meanwhile, Tannenbaum says he looks forward to what Dallas Thomas could become.

All you can do is give the guy a clean slate, which is basically what Philbin said. What he does from here will be our concern. As long as he doesn't get himself suspended, he can be as mean and nasty as he wants on the field (appears to be a gentleman off the field) as far as i'm concerned. Just watch the penalties. We just got rid of Wheeler, no need to cover for his role.

Heard this before with other players..."they will all behave once they are Dolphins"...yah right!... He will have issues.

He's fiery on the field, off the field he's a none issue, he dabbles in business and charity...that is it.
