The recent kicking duel between Olindo Mare and John Kasay didn't go unappreciated by one longtime NFL executive in attendance.

When Charley Casserly began working in the league in 1977, there were still barefoot and straight-ahead kickers. The average field-goal percentage that season was 58.3 and older specialists weren't necessarily expected to have booming leg strength.

Fast-forward almost three decades to Thursday's Dolphins-Panthers exhibition game at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, where Casserly watched a pair of veterans continue to get their kicks.

Kasay, 36, launched three field goals of 40-plus yards, including a 53-yarder, for the Panthers. Mare, 33, nailed his fifth touchback in eight exhibition attempts and a 23-yard field goal while just missing on a 55-yard try that sailed wide left in the Dolphins' 19-10 loss.

Suffice to say, Kasay and Mare aren't in any danger of being released today when the first round of preseason roster cuts are made.

mare is an accurate kicker, and on the espn sportsnation poll archive, there is a question about mare if you would be comfortable with him kicking a a 45 yd game winning field goal.. couldn't get the link, but a majority voted yes

I hope we can keep him till he is no longer productive or he retires. I think he can continue to contribute for many more years to come. Anyone who thinks he should be cut due to his salary is crazy. He's worth every penny.

:dolphins: GO DOLPHINS!

at one time he was the premire kicker in the nfl. he was the vinateri

His reputation suffered because he had an off year a few years back

I am ok with Olindo as long as he doesn't miss a lot of gimme 30 yarders, and as long as he sends kickoffs deep. I would love for us to draft Mason Crosby, kicker from the Univ. of Colorado, next year....he is a guy who could go in the 2nd and possibly the 1st round. He has a stronger leg than anyone I have seen and can kick 50 yaders like extra points...even at sea level.

I'm probably the only one but I enjoyed Olindo's recent press interview.
