Now that they have extended Cameron Wake, the Dolphins are mulling which potential 2013 free agents they should sign next. Randy Starks and Anthony Fasano said Miami has not made offers (though Starks will be eventually, from what we hear), and Reggie Bush surprisingly has not been approached.

Jake Long said he is unaware of any contract talks, but Miami will use the franchise tag on him next spring if a deal isn’t reached. Expect offers eventually to Brian Hartline and Sean Smith, entering the last year of their deals…. The Dolphins are concerned about drops from their young receivers in practice.
Miami has over $50 million in cap space next offseason, so I have to think a good amount of our free agents will be re-signed. My guess is Long, Starks, Fields and Hartline will definitely get extensions. I think Bush has a good chance to come back also. Not sure about Fasano and Smith, really depends on what happens this season.

Long probably should be tagged. He seems to be breaking down at a young age and we don't want to deal with the back end of a big contract on a broken down player. Ask Yankee fans (such as myself) how happy they are with A Rod's deal at the moment. We should see how Long's knee, back, biceps and labrum are holding up by the end of next year, then act accordingly.
As far as everyone else, I'd welcome back Starks with open arms (barring something catastrophic) and tell everyone else to hit the road. We need all that cap space to bring in good players that fit the new system, not bring back the old garbage that brought us nothing better than 7-9.

*edit - On second thought, we'll probably need to bring back Hartline for the simple fact that we have nothing else at WR. But we are still in desperate need of a Brandon Marshall type player at that position. Funny how that works.

It will be cheaper to do it too...............top 5.

Id like to see a top 3 pick on another real threat te and let fasano go next yr. Love jake long and would feel bad franchising him.playrrs see that as a team not believing in them. I.hope he goes injury free and we lock him down after this yr.

Cam Wakes signing his extension gives us that option.

I wonder what will happen to Bush he might seem expandable with Miller and Daniel Thomas at the RB spot. ( I wish he stays but i have a feeling hes going to want a big deal )

I'm curious what kind of contract Smith is going to want. Just my opinion but I think he's going to want to much.

Smith doesnt deserve a big contract. If he prices himself high then we should say see ya

i think they are going to wait and see what kind of years miller and bush has, and if miller is productive they will probly let bush walk. also a wait and see on how smith plays and how fasano plays. but if clay and engrew have big years fasono will probly be a jet in 13 (i would put big money on that)

from what i heard and read is that the staff is high on him right now bc of his offseason and ota's. but we'll see once the pads are on

Even if he has a great yr. Should we reward a big contract on one yr? Im a smith supporter but cant see rewarding one good yr w a big extension.

no, i agree. we shouldnt over pay, but i could see an extension.

We're holding all the cards. He has health issues and we drafted a potential replacement. No reason to overpay. Franchise him, and if he isn't reasonable after that, see ya!

OK...this may take a little, but please listen to this logic. This DOES NOT APPLY JUST TO LONG!

Before the current CBA, contracts for early draft players and good vets was going through the roof.

Why was that? It was because of the large cost of the early round rookies. If you wanted to replace someone with an early pick, YOU HAD TO PAY BIG TIME FOR IT. The contracts for veteran players was actually getting to be less than a 1st round rookie.

Now we have the new CBA. What is that going to do?

Well, now if you want to replace someone like Long, you can draft a rookie...and actually pay less than what it costs to keep the veteran.

This is not going to work out for the vets like they may think. I think a lot of the vets with REALLY BIG contracts are going to just be let go as the NFL adjusts to the new CBA. The incentive to keep the vets just won't be there.

Now, someone might say, "well, you have the cap an you have to spend a certain amount." I agree. In that case, I think you are going to start to see a MORE EVEN DISTRIBUTION of the money. You will no longer have a few guys on the team making all the money...

This will take a couple of years to work itself out....but I believe you will see this trend.

So, IMHO we might as well be ahead of the curve on this. I would franshise him, but if we can't get a decent deal done....let him walk, and get his replacement in the next draft at a much cheaper price.

A few guys with big contracts is the old days...time to move on....spread the wealth...one guy isn't worth the coin he gets relative to the others.
