[h=2]The Miami Dolphins surprised a few in the media last year when the draft turned out to be heavier on offense than defense.

This year it looks like it will be the opposite.[/h]
There was little doubt when the season ended that the Dolphins needed to upgrade their defense which ranked near the bottom statistically.
Add to that aging veterans and impending free agents and Miami’s defense could look a lot different. But will the Dolphins actually go heavy on defense?

According to Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald that is precisely what could happen.
That from people familiar with the team’s current thinking.
Indeed, one source said coach Adam Gase told some within the organization he expects the draft will be used primarily for the team’s defensive needs” – Armando Salguero

It makes sense given the state of the Dolphins defense.
Of course we are entering that part of the off-season where rumors and misdirection run rampant across the NFL landscape.
It would however be nice to see a defense heavy draft.

Looking at the last four drafts it’s clear that offense has been more of a priority.

In 2016 Miami drafted a corner in round two but didn’t take another defensive player until round six and he was the last player on that side of the ball.

2015 saw three defensive players with one in round 2, Jordan Phillips, Bobby McCain in round 5, and FS Cedric Thompson in round 5.

2014 had three players taken as well but the first player on defense wasn’t drafted until round 4 and then in round 5 and 7.
Of the three only 7th rounder Terrence Fede is still on the roster and he is nowhere near starting material.

2013 saw the last defensive heavy draft by the Dolphins when Dion Jordan was taken in round 1 and Jamar Taylor was taken in round 2.
Miami also added a 3rd round DB, Will Davis, LB Jelani Jenkins in round 4 and 7th rounder Don Jones.

For the Dolphins the problem is that these players either have not made an impact on the roster or are no longer on the team. Of the 13 defensive picks in the last four years only 8 are still on the team. This includes Dion Jordan who will more than likely be released before free agency and Tony Lippett who was drafted as a WR and converted to CB.

Conversely the Dolphins have tended to spend more defensively in free agency and tend to stray from the top end players on offense. Ndamukong Suh, Kiko Alonso, Byron Maxwell, Andre Branch, Earl Mitchell, and Isa Abdul-Quddus all came from free agency or trade. While the Dolphins tend to buy low along the offensive line they did spend big on Branden Albert.

Your thoughts? :ponder:

I'll believe it when I see it. They had the chance to go defense in last year's draft and traded too much to move up for Carroo.

It seems like we are leaning defense heavy in the draft. That being said I thought we were going defense last year in the 1st until Tunsil fell into our laps. A great offensive player may slide to us blowing up this plan, you just don't know what teams are going to do ahead of you in the draft.

2013 should have stocked the d with players that would be the core of good D...4 year vets with 2-3 being starters and a couple depth guys. What a disappointment. I'd love to get 2-3 long term, high quality starters and a couple depth guys on D this year...core along with a few young guys we already have for the next decade...

Makes sense. The majority of needs are on the defensive side and that unit needs almost a complete overhaul. Miami has some talent on that side of the ball with Suh, Wake, Alonso, Jones and Howard, but holes on the defensive line (pass rusher) and linebacker. The Dolphins could also use another good corner who is versatile enough to play in the slot.

Looking at free agency, I like what's out there on the offensive line but it doesn't seem like there's much talent at linebacker. Of course that could change, but I'd say nail down guard in free agency and go almost exclusively defense in the draft.

This is actually incorrect. We took four defensive players that year...three of them in the 5th round, Bobby McCain, Tony Lippett and Cedric Thompson.

If it was an Defense Draft.....wouldn't bother me one bit. Just pick impact players in the first 4 rounds. We need a Jarvis Landry type on the defensive side of the ball, particularly at Linebacker.

We need to go heavy on the defense however just like last year if an offensive gem is available you pull the trigger. I would have no problem with going after one of the two top TE's in round one if either fall to us. Then you go strong defensively the rest of the draft.

Remember we still have free agency to help fill some of the defensive holes and improving the offensive actually helps the defense if they can control the clock and limit the number of defensive snaps.

I want an influx of good, cheap, young talent on d, but if you get a Tunsil type drop, I've no issue with grabbing a special player even if he's not a need..although depending on the situation (WR, Qb, LT), I might prefer a trade back to someone else who covets him to get extra picks...

Great point. If Howard or Nkoju are still there, then you pounce on them IMO, otherwise defense defense defense!

well, obviously the jury is still out on carroo. but, as far as the trade, we only gave a 6th round pick from the 2016 draft. so unless you are suggesting the team should have traded back into the 3rd round for a defensive player without giving up that 6th round pick, then using that 6th round pick for another defensive player, i don't see how the carroo pick/trade had anything to do with the lack of defense in last year's draft.

(the rest of the trade was a 3rd and 4th from the 2017 draft. so if he turns out to be a player, that is an absolute steal. the third round '17 pick is the player himself, with the bonus of having him one year early, and then the 2016 6th, and the 2017 4th.)

This is the #1 reason our defense is so bad. Whiffing on all those defensive players in the 2013 draft (not mentioning the whiffing in 2013 free agency too). SMH.

I love the idea and like many feel it's WAY past time to pay strict attention to our defense....BUT...what do YOU do IF...and it's a BIG IF....

Fournette is there?
Howard is there?

...And given that what if Fournette is there in the first AND Njoku is there in the second?

I know it PROBABLY would never fall that way but...what would you do?
