The Dolphins engaged in a game of tug-of-war at Monday’s practice, special teams coordinator and newly named assistant head coach Darren Rizzi revealed in an interview with the Finsiders.

It’s part of interim head coach Dan Campbell’s aggressive, intense practices.

“We had 1-on-1s on the side,” Rizzi told the Finsiders. “We did a little tug of war today — a little tug of war battle — which the guys had fun with. We did a little one handed catch with the linemen — little things to create competition.”
Campbell on Monday also showed Dolphins players a short video of NBA legend Michael Jordan, who is perhaps the greatest all-time sports competitor.

It sounds like a page out of Pat Riley’s book, who respects Jordan so much that he hung his Bulls jersey in the Heat rafters.

“In this video, he talks about how there’s not a more competitive person he’s ever met than himself,” Rizzi said. “Dan’s message to the team was that he wants us to have a room full of Michael Jordans. He wants the 63 guys, including the practice squad guys, to be the most competitive people that they knows and not have to have the coach be able to motivate you.”

Rizzi said it’s been a tough week and while he feels for former coach Joe Philbin, he understands the coaching change.

“I have the utmost respect for Joe Philbin as a human being, as a coach,” Rizzi said. “Let’s call it what it is. No one want to see a coach lose their job. I’m a coach, it’s what I do for a living.

Hopefully they take them to a WWE event to see some real intense competition

They need to watch every game of the '72 and '73 Dolphins seasons because that is how they need to play if they are able to accomplish anything this season.

Starting to look a lot like a high school football coach here. Maybe it will work?

we'll see.... Got to go back to the roots. Dig deep and find that love for the game again.

Kind of my thoughts....hes seen these guys day in and day out and hopefully knows what they need....maybe finding that love for the game is where it starts

The difference between successful people and unsuccessful people is will. The will to succeed.

Hope Campbell's got enough of that to make up for inexperience.

It was pretty obvious they weren't having any fun out there, maybe this will help. IMO though trick plays are an easy way to crank up the fun factor while distracting away from the pressure of the game.

As for motivational videos I would show a Mike Tyson documentary. You want animal? You want primate? It doesn't get any more primal than Iron Mike. If they fear you its already over. If they don't fear you... they will in about 10 minutes...

Tomorrow's practice they find One-Eyed Willie's treasure and cure aids.
