Dolphins players appreciate Philbin's major changes (SPORTS BUZZ 9/9/14)

Philbin is at fault for not knowing what was going on in "his" locker room last year regarding the Bullygate affair with Martin. Both he his offensive line coach or both should have known that there were issues with those guys and in conclusion he really had not much choice but make a appearence and see whats happening with his players this year.

Ryan Tannehill said he thought Martin and Incognito were besties, and I believe him. And he was in the same locker room witnessing them on a daily basis. Maybe Martin was just an irrational spaz and the knowing of "locker room problems" was just not realistic in this case.

I remember similar stories about wanny and sparano, but in the end the only thing that makes one great is achieving greatness. win and nothing else matters. I hope that philbin's newfound social skills only helps the players reach their maximum or even beyond ability.

I will give Philbin credit for the hire itself. He set his ego aside and hired a young, commanding guy who could very well pose a threat to his own job if things shake a certain way. He definitely selected the most qualified guy for the job. But I can't give him complete credit for having Lazor here, knowing full well that if wasn't forced to fire Sherman, he would still be here with his go-go gadget playbook.

I know everyone likes to pretend they know what happens behind closed doors and rumor seems to always become fact around here but I don't know if Philbin was forced to fire Sherman. Regardless, he hired Lazor to take over...even though for some that hiring is somehow negated by the "fact" he was forced to fire Sherman.

I will say this...I've never seen a gathering of so many perfect people in one place before. We seem to have a lot of posters that have never made a mistake in their lives, would be better HCs, OCs or DCs than any in the NFL, have better passer ratings than any QB we've had except Marino and can run the ball better than Barry Sanders, Gayle Sayers, Jim Brown and Emmit Smith rolled into one...and more speed than Usain Bolt with his butt on fire.

Its hilarious that on one hand Philbin had the power to make the moves he didn't have control over and is getting blamed for the Marshall trade and the non-Albert trade while at the same time he was too weak to make the moves he did have final say over in firing Sherman and Turner.

For me the circumstances around the Marshall trade were very similar to the Bess trade. It appeared as though Marshall was damaged goods and could have been facing a year suspension if the assault rumors were real. Its a prick move to unload damaged goods on another team. Who do we think was the prick of our organization, Philbin or Ireland?

We still should have gotten more value for Marshall - two no 3s wasn't good enough. @#$# Ireland...

Joe Philbin was absolutely forced to fire Mike Sherman. And I think that's the best thing that ever happened to Joe Philbin, because Mike Sherman was not doing a good job.

However, Joe Philbin absolutely deserves every ounce of credit for some REALLY good assistant coaching hires this offseason. Benton and Duffner are overlooked because of Bill Lazor, but I think those were both 'out of the park' position coach pickups. As I've said before, I'm really impressed with how Philbin quietly went about finding quality assistant coaches through all the turmoil this offseason.


BTW, I'm just going to throw this out there: I think Steve Ross isn't as dumb as a lot of people here think he is. He has generally let the football people run the football team, but in the two instances we've heard of that Ross has stepped in and issued directives, they were to nix the Kyle Orton trade and to force out Mike Sherman.

Regardless he screwed up the picks anyway...well the jury is still out on Will Davis but Egnew was a horrible pick.

Getting more picks with Ireland in charge proved to be pointless.

You guys can believe whatever the hell you want. But I don't believe for a second that Ross ordered Sherman to be fired or Philbin would be fired right along with him was the entire story. Think about who would have leaked something like that in the first place for your first clue.

If you had to ask me what was the bigger issue last year: the O-Line depth, or the playcalling, I would honestly say the line. If we had holes, Miller and Thomas would have rushed better and the passing/running game would have been far more balanced, Tannehill better protected, and likely more 1st downs, even if it's a Sherman grab-bag. Maybe not playoff wins, but definitely less sacks on Tannehill and more capability for bigger/better plays.

Not trying to say Sherman still on the team today would be a great thing, I'm glad he's gone too, but Philbin may have thought it kind of an overreaction to cut him if Ireland was still employed as GM, and IMO, I'd feel the same.

If your car is running like **** and you discover the alternator is bad, you replace it and test the results. You don't replace everything you can think of just because. That's troubleshooting 101. And to take that analogy a step further even if you think the engine might be an issue as well if you're on a tight deadline then it would probably be in your interest to take a gamble on it. If you have a week to get somewhere and it takes a week just to replace the engine, what would you do?

People are clinging to this rumor that Philbin threatened to quit as their smoking gun, but again I ask who would have leaked something like that? Jeff Ireland or Mike Sherman would be the likely suspects right? Its easy to imagine how the truth could be bent more than a little from either camp.

I think the truth is in the middle of the two extremes. It might have been suggested that we move on from Sherman but a negotiation would have taken place from there:
a) Ireland had to go
b) there would be no "playoffs or bust" ultimatum if he revamped the offense

I think people are making too big of a deal in the why of how Lazor came about. Win a bunch of games and it really doesn't matter, like at all.

Gotta agree on that one, they want to treat the personel on the phins like they are some hired hands of theirs and being a Dolphin fans justifys their opinions.
