The following are updates from the Miami Dolphins training camp practice at the team's training facility on the Nova Southeastern University campus:

-- There's a bad exchange on the snap: Pouncey/Devlin. Pouncey has had better days than today.
-- Clyde Gates just made a real nice catch. Out-jumped Vontae Davis and made a nice catch on a fade from M. Moore in back left of the EZ.
-- Red zone: Henne to Gates, broken up by Sean Smith in the end zone. Nice play by Smith. Was a good throw.
-- Red zone: Henne to Fasano -- 20-yard touchdown. Nice play.
-- Back to 11-on-11. Henne with an authoritative throw down the middle to Bess. Also had a nice ball, though incomplete. to Hartline.
-- Jake Long getting after it in his rehab work. No surprise there. He's strong.
-- Will Allen jumping some rope on one end of the practice fields ... not practicing again today.
-- Henne putting together another solid day thus far. Looks comfortable out there. Making decisive throws.
-- 11-on-11 work ends with two incomplete passes from O'Connell. Here comes some 7-on-7. Henne at the helm. Checks down to Hartline.
-- Now Pat Devlin is in at quarterback. He completed one of his two attempts, a short one in the flat.
-- Then it was Moore's turn. He threw a couple nice passes, as well. Also -- it feels like I'm sitting in an oven.
-- Doing some 11-on-11 passing work right now. Henne looked good. Had a nice 15-yard pass to Marshall.
-- Michael Irvin up here in the media crow's nest. Making a visit.
-- Will Allen jumping some rope on one end of the practice fields ... not practicing again today.
-- Segment drills, as usual. Normal stuff going on.
-- Here come the Dolphins ... Reggie Bush first one out on the practice field.

hmm... Wondering if Gates actually out-jumped Vontae or if Vontae just timed the leap wrong.

I would not be surprised it Gates out jumped Vontae. He was a very good basketball player and defiantly has hops by looking at his videos.

Gates has a 40 inch vertical and is 6'0".

Vontae has a 38 inch vertical and is 5'11".

If both timed it perfectly Gates has 3 inches on him.

He was a basketball player, that's what he went to ACU for in the first place and then his cousin convinced him to play football. At the combine he had a 40" vertical.

We have thrown 200 more NFL routes in the first week of TC than we did all of last year. Nice to see. I am not going to miss the constant barrage of outs and curls thrown towards the sidelines.

Umm... aren't vertical jumps independent of height?

Ya they are. So basically Vontae would need a 41 inch vertical to be equally as high as Gates in a jump. Make sense? (AND thats not even taking "reach" into consideration)

Umm... aren't vertical jumps independent of height?

Yes but when you factor in reach, which usually has a correlation to height, theres a difference. Someone who's 5'10" with a 7'6" reach has a 40" vertical can't reach as high as someone 6'0" with a 7'11" reach and a 40" vertical. That's a 5" difference...see what I'm saying?

good question.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vertical_jump

as it turns out, a players height doesnt factor in to determining a vertical jump measurement. You first have to find the players "standing reach", then measure their standing jump height, and the difference between the two is the vertical jump measurement.

Therefore, all things being equal, Vontae gets out jumped by 2 inches, not 3 (because of the height difference).

...right?

:chuckle:
