The Dolphins running game has produced consistently this season, regardless of who has been in the lineup.
Through the first six weeks of the regular season, the Dolphins rank sixth in the NFL with an average of 136.2 yards per game and they’re an even more impressive third with a 5.0 average per carry.
The 5.0 average, incidentally, is right on par with the Dolphins franchise record, set in 1971.
The Dolphins started the season with a tremendous 191-yard rushing performance in the season opener against the New England Patriots when Moreno rushed for an NFL-best 134 yards, but they also had rushing totals of 141 yards against the Kansas City Chiefs and 157 yards against the Oakland Raiders while Moreno was sidelined with an elbow injury.
“I personally just found out today,” running back Damien Williams said of the Moreno news. “It’s a sad thing just to see a player go down and somebody who’s in my room every day who’s been in the league for a while and someone I look up to, but it’s one of those cases where you’ve just got to fill in and keep doing what he was doing.”
The Dolphins also will be looking for Lamar Miller to continue his strong performance.
Even when Moreno played against both New England and Green Bay, Miller started every game this season and he’s the sixth-leading rusher in the AFC with 330 yards.
More importantly, Miller’s average of 5.2 yards per carry is tied for third-best among NFL running backs with enough attempts to qualify for league stats.
“I’m just trying to improve everything, for the most part,” Miller said. “I think I’ve been running the ball pretty good and the offensive line, they’ve been doing a great job of just opening the holes and making my job easier.”
