Dolphins reaching out to Zach Streif

As a Saints fan I can tell you about Zach Streif -

The Good -

Massive at 6' 7", 320 lb.

He'll give you everything he's got (unfortunately he isn't that athletically gifted)

Solid pass blocker whose massive size shields off defenders

The Bad -

Like all Saints' O lineman he benefited massively from Payton's quick read, quick release scheme and Brees lightning fast release. This tends to make average OL look great and good OL look All World

Average at best run blocker. Despite his size he isn't a road grader in the running game.

He also benefited from playing next to perennial Pro Bowl Guard Jahri Evans.

He'll be 31 this year and suffered injuries (he hasn't finished a full 16 game season since 2009)

This is why the Saints interest in re-signing him is only lukewarm. Even before the draft the Saints have two guys vying to replace him - Marcel Jones who is physically identical to Streif at 6' 7", 320lb. and Bryce Harris 6' 6", 305 lb. The Saints are only around $1.1 under the cap at this point so they aren't going to be able to match any offer for Streif but my guess is he'll give the team a chance before signing elsewhere.

Thanks for the info. As long as he can pass protect, I'm on board with the signing. He can't be worse than Colombo or Clabo.

I see him being the best option left as a true experienced, starter, at RT. I hope they do all they can to bring him in.

thank you...the desperation around here is getting in peoples heads evidently...not to mention his qb has mastered the pocket in brees...

The Saints are capped out and that is why they are luke warm.

Had the Saints had strong interest in keeping him his deal would've gotten done before free agency. He wanted a new deal from the Saints, the Saints asked his agent about what he wanted, and it ended there. Loomis finds ways to keep the guys they really want. Loomis knows how to work the cap.......

I love it when teams think their guy makes moves in terms of the cap that nobody has figured out yet. I hear that all the time with Dawn Aponte.

With that said, if Loomis was so effective with the cap why are jettisoning half their playmakers? The answer is they have franchise QB making the lion share of the money and they are unable to strike a deal with the best TE in football.

They are capped out and that is why Strief is not back.

that's not the answer but go ahead and tell the die hard saints fan what is...like junc does with us

Morgan Moses would be a fit at RT, but I want the flexibility to draft BPA

yes the saints want to be able to work up a long term deal with graham but he's tagged now and they bought themselves a year to do so...they have rb options waiting in the wings so they let sproles go and got younger there lance moore was losing snaps to kenny stills anyways and that was not gonna change strief is just a average athlete that is getting older and frankly not that hard to find...so why would they be anything but luke warm about a contract for him...they can replace him if they want probably in the draft if they dont have an in house replacement anyways...they did it right and got their left tackle in the draft last year...

they could have signed streif instead of dropping a brinks truck in jarius byrds lap if they wanted to...they didn't...and i doubt they care if he was to move on

at this point i think miami should look to the draft for the right tackle...the options aren't worth the money imo...sign some of these guards on the cheap and go to the draft...doubt philbin will though...we dont want with benton our oline coach two average at best move athlete tackles...unless we are gonna run some different stuff...trying to sign a beadles tells me we are not though...

Sign a couple guys, look at Brandon Thomas in round 2. That would give us some flexibility. Bringing in a guy like EDS gives us some flexibility to by moving Pouncey to guard. If we don't bag Shelley or Dietrich Smith and a starting caliber RT our hands may be tied in the draft.

I do not have an issue doing two FA guards and drafting a RT.

However, Streif is solid player that has pass protected well. Do I think he comes to Miami? No. I would sign a vet like Eric Winston who has experience with a ZBS and see what happens with the draft. Winston is still 30 years old and was okay. However, I would be very happy with Streif.

I'm not doing the Eric Winston dance a third time....gimme Ryan Harris on the cheap if we can't snag Strief and draft his replacement.
