Miami Dolphins receiver Jarvis Landry does not seem fond of the term "slot receiver."

That is where Landry did most of his damage last season when he led the Dolphins with 84 receptions as a rookie. However, Landry does not want to be defined by that in his second season and is looking to grow his role.

"I think he’s got a chance to do that. He’s lined up in a variety of spots. He’s done some things outside," Dolphins coach Joe Philbin said recently. "I think his natural home base is still inside, but he certainly has shown the ability [to do more], he’s a real quality route-runner. He can run different routes that you want on the outside. The beauty of him is he doesn’t slow down when he’s coming out of cuts. So if he can get on top of the (defensive back), he doesn’t waste any time whatsoever. That’s really, to me, is what makes him effective."

Landry caught a 60-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Ryan Tannehill in training camp. It was one of the biggest passing plays in training camp, and it came from the receiver you would least expect. Miami rarely tried that deep-ball combination last season.

Landry is not a speed-burner, which is part of the reason the Dolphins were able to get him in the second round last year. But Landry makes up for his lack of elite speed with precise routes, strong hands and competitiveness. Those are assets that will get Landry more looks on the outside, and Landry also has a touchdown reception in the preseason.

"Absolutely, I’m excited about the opportunity that I’ve been getting," Landry said recently. "I think for me now is just try to continue to develop, continue to evolve as we move forward schematically and try to make plays. I think that’s what we all have to do, to compete at a high level.

Fan favorite for sure. Tannehill to Landry is going to be a great duo for years to come.

We have a nice diversity of receivers this year, what would make us even harder to defend is if these guys can show the ability to play in different spots and we get the match ups we want.

One thing I noticed vs Chicago last week was that Landry helped spring Miller for his 27 yard run with a great block when Jarvis was lined up on the outside. That's the kinda of things coaches love to see.

If Golden Tate can play outside the slot so can Landry. Tate is one inch taller and slightly faster, but that's about the only advantage he has on Landry.

Golden Tate's 40 time at the combine was 4.42.

Jarvis Landry's 40 times were 4.77 (combine) and 4.61 (pro day).

Landry pulled a hamstring. He is closer estimated to a 4.55, which would make Tate on inch taller and slightly faster as gregorygrant83 rightfully pointed out.

Twice? Landry pulled a hamstring at the combine AND at his pro day?

No sir, just the combine.

They do have Landry's LSU pro day 40 listed as 4.58 here:

Jarvis Landry clearly wasn’t 100% at the combine and while nobody expected a blazing athletic performance — a 4.77 wasn’t a fair reflection of his ability.

Now that a hamstring issue has cleared up, he ran two 4.58’s at the LSU pro day today (according to Tony Pauline). It’s more what we expected from Landry and allows him to regain some momentum ahead of next months draft.

Regardless, I think we can all agree that despite whatever he runs he is a very effective WR and his 40 means very little in terms of the big picture of his great talents.

Jerry Rice ran a 4.7 at his pro day.

Football play speed is different than a straight line 40 yard dash without pads on.

Nobody disputes that Jarvis Landry is a great slot receiver. But all the data shows that he is NOT the game-breaking, field stretching WR we want on the outside.

You can look at measurables like his height, weight, slow 40 time, weak vertical leap, etc.

Or you can look at the fact that in his entire career (college & NFL), Jarvis Landry has never had a 50+ yd reception. Ever. Not even a short pass that he took 50+ yds.

Meanwhile, Kenny Stills, DeVante Parker, Greg Jennings, Rishard Matthews have all run in the 4.4s or faster, and all have plenty of 50+ yd receptions. Whether it's by timed speed or actual game play, we have 4 other WRs with more proven game-breaking ability, which is what we need on the outside.

Jarvis Landry has great hands, he's fearless & tough over the middle, and he fights for more yards in traffic. I have no problem occasionally lining him up outside. But Jarvis Landry's greatest value to us is in the slot.

All have plenty of 50 yards plus receptions.... not sure if serious...?

First of all you can't compare NFL players with their college stats... that's exactly how you end up making an argument that puts Landry and Matthews in the same sentence... And 50+ yards receptions are rare in the NFL, none of our receivers are in the categorie that will end up with plenty... not that it matters because we all know Wallace isn't a top tier WR while being in that categorie. ..
