only reason I could see the dolphins doing this is so they get a compensatory pick for him. Otherwise the deal was pretty friendly to the dolphins.

Only big money "outside" unrestricted free agent that's been signed under Tannebaum/Grier was Suh. Outside of that, it's been taking care of their own who have proven themselves, and searching for value or short term deals with any anybody else.

Is giving him free agency after 1 season in order to get a little more cap flexibility a little like being penny wise and pound foolish? Ya know, like the $1.5-$2mil more than offered to CJ Anderson that they could have given Miller before realizing what they had in Ajayi. ???
