DAVIE – A.J. Hendy was speaking to a couple of reporters soon after Sunday’s practice concluded when fellow safety Shamiel Gary deposited his helmet at Hendy’s feet.

Hendy looked at Gary and smiled. He knows the drill.
“I got to pay my dues,” the undrafted rookie out of Maryland said. Hendy then picked up Gary’s and safety Reshad Jones’ helmets, carrying them as he headed to the locker room.
About the only thing closer to Hendy these days than his teammates’ helmets is the football. After intercepting a pass in the team’s initial scrimmage eight days ago, Hendy did it again in the preseason opener, recording one of Miami’s two interceptions off Giants quarterback Ryan Nassib during the Dolphins’ 27-10 victory Friday.
Coach Adam Gase was asked if Hendy has a knack for being around the ball.

“It seems like it,” Gase said. “In OTAs it was the same thing. I remember his name just being constantly brought up. Anytime you get your hands on balls, that’s going to get coaches’ attention, guys are going to turn around and be like, ‘Who’s that?’
“His name just keeps coming up. That’s one way to keep trying to find a way to get on this roster.”

AJ Hendy's draft stats:

Draft projections

CBS Sports lists him as the No. 23 safety in the draft and has him going undrafted, while NFLDraftScout ranks him as the 22nd-best free safety in the 85-person class.

Maryland stats

2015: 41 games played, 76 tackles (48 solo), 4 pass-breakups, one tackle for loss,
Career: 142 tackles, 2 interceptions, 7 pass-breakups

Pro day performance

40-yard dash: 4.56 seconds
225-pound bench reps: 16
Vertical jump: 40.5 inches
Broad jump: 11 feet 3 inches

Height: 6 feet
Weight: 208 lbs.

That vertical and broad jump are pretty explosive numbers.

Hendy and Tyler Gray my favorite UDFAs based on the college footage although I have to say I could not watch Akil Blount's (because I don't know of any out there) and I got lazy and didn't bother watching Lafayette Pitts (should have, he was impressive Friday night).

Gray is going to have a tough time making it or getting preseason playing time because he's built so obviously like a Sam linebacker but in college he played a multitude of positions so he's got to convince the coaches to throw him in there at Mike or Will to get an increased look at him, because he only got 7 snaps this Friday. He did well with them, but still just 7 snaps in a game where the backups were getting the overwhelming majority of the snaps.

alright fellow Terp, I hope he sticks on special teams

Agree on both Hendy and Pitts

I thought he was a safety also... Showed nice awareness on the int, but don't know much else about him.

J off you seem to like him, so that's good. I hope we can see some of Blount in the preseason too, I just want to root for him so bad

I believe I'd seen it noted, but I haven't seen it highlighted; on Hendy's INT, he was the single-high, with Aikens in the box, with the CB's in press man, against a 3-WR look. He covers a lot of ground to make a timely INT. If he didn't get there, the WR likely catches the pass on the rebound. Great play by Pitt,s too. I'd like to see him get some of Lippetts' looks with the ones. Brandon Harris also locked up the slot receiver on that play. If Hendy continues to play at this rate (not saying he needs an INT every game), he'll find playing time. So far, he looks like one of the three best Safeties on the team (Jones, Aikens).

As a D in general, I notice a lot more gap integrity. That was always the thing that killed me about Coyle. His schemes would create huge holes in the D. This D gave up some plays, but it wasn't because they were running themselves out of lanes. I like what Joseph's doing a lot.

Everytime we talk about a young DB flashing, I can't help but think how nice it would be to have these potential guys behind some starting caliber talent, instead of a questionable #1 and far more questionable #2.
