Safety Ced Thompson, a Dolphins fifth-round pick from Minnesota, has signed with New England’s practice squad instead of signing a futures contract with the Dolphins.

Thompson, the third of the Dolphins’ four fifth-round picks in the 2015 draft, was the only draftee who didn’t see time from scrimmage.
Interim coach Dan Campbell said Thompson never mastered the skill of playing special teams, something that Campbell said held him back all season.
The Dolphins had a need for safeties during the season after starting free safety Louis Delmas was injured during preseason. Walt Aikens took over but lost the job early in the season. Michael Thomas took over and held the job for most of the season although Shamiel Gary saw time there late in the season.

Wonder why he wouldn't give Vance Joseph a chance to work with him after all the positive news we've heard about VJ? I liked him coming out Minnesota, it was mental as a corner convert.

Rather would have had him on the 53 than Aikens, Gary, .... Kovacs, etc.. Whoever we rolled with all year. There's some potential there. Maybe Joseph could've tapped into it.. Regardless still need to bring in a known quantity at fs

Aikens was one of the best gunners in the league. Atleast he contributed. Reshad jones looked terrible his first 2 years as well, just sayingf

"Terrible" might be a bit of a stretch. He was played out of position his 2nd year if I recall. But dude you can make all the excuses you want for Aikens. He's bad, we could find a gunner anywhere.. I'm sure Thompson could have handled it just fine

Well jones certainly look like hed be what he is today thats my point. Yes aikens looked terrible and most rookies do. You cant draft a safety in the 4th then throw him out there and get mad when he looks lost. Of course he looks lost, he's playing about 2 years too early.

Not saying Ced did anything to earn a spot this year . . . But really thought he would make strides and earn a spot on the team as the backup SS and special teams stand out in 2016.

Not the greatest news. I had some curiosity about Thompson due to the terrific test scores he managed last spring before the draft. There had to be lesser athletes on our roster who should have been exposed above Thompson.

Can't we still sign him to the 53 if he is on NE's PS?

Fair point. I'm all about developing guys and being patient but he just pains me. Oh and he wasn't a rookie btw

Smart guy, well spoken, appeared conscientious. Unfortunately totally lacking in football instincts.

Actually, yeah, logically he would choose a PS instead of a future contract, right? We'll see what happens after the season. There's a chance we could still get him, although he might well choose New England. I wonder if PS get championship rings?
