The Dolphins will sign quarterback Shane Matthews to take the roster spot of Daunte Culpepper, a source said.
A 13-year NFL veteran and record-setting quarterback at the University of Florida in the early 1990s, the 36-year-old Matthews and former UM starter Brock Berlin both had Tuesday workouts at Dolphins headquarters.
The Dolphins placed Culpepper on injured reserve Tuesday because he would be unable to play again this season following recent knee surgery. The Dolphins also may need added depth at quarterback because starter Joey Harrington suffered a sprained ankle during last Sunday's 21-0 shutout of New England.
Harrington's status for Sunday's game at Buffalo will be known Wednesday when the Dolphins issue their first pre-game injury report.
Cleo Lemon and rookie Marcus Vick, who also receives practice snaps at wide receiver, are the Dolphins' current backup quarterbacks.
