The above link gives us a list of the 34 players under contract for next year. They total $110M on the cap, which will be over $150M, giving us $40M to start. However, that includes cap hits for Wallace, Ellerbe, Hartline, Wheeler, Fields, and D Thomas totaling another $40M. It is very possible that all of these players will not be here this year, let alone in 2016.

By next year, we may even be including Wake, Grimes, and Albert for age and injury, which is another $30M. Depending on what we do this year, we could realistically be in position to replace half the team next year with a TON of cap space. This would be an ideal situation for a new GM and HC with their young QB n place.

Is this what Ross was looking at when he kept the coaches in place? Don't know but the option is mot definitely there IF this season does not work out.

You are giving Ross way to much credit if you think that is what he is looking at

True but, maybe he looked at Pat Riley doing the same with the Heat and copied the idea. It will be interesting to see how my theory affects what we do in FA for this year.

That's if we don't spend on FA's this year. New multi-year deals tend to eat into future cap $

... just saying. :idk:

That's going to tell us what their plans are. If they spend big for good players and sign them long term they are all in this year. If they however just patch things with one year deals on the cheap they could have their eyes set on 2016.
i hope it's the first one. Getting too old to simple write off a season to plan for down the road.

How much will we spend? The only long term FA deal Hickey committed to last year was Albert. All of the above mentioned players would total over $100M for 2016.

Our next GM is already in the building: Mike Tannenbaum.

Just like Dawn Aponte and Jeff Ireland(and even Sparano to a much lesser extent), Ross will simply adjust his role when Hickey is shown the door. We are stuck with that incompetent asshole until, at the very least, 2019. And i personally think Ross doesnt make another change until after he sells the team(a year or two after he hosts his coveted Super Bowl).

With that in mind, Ross has no reason to plan for the future. Its already taken care of. Either Philbin wins 8 games and gets an extension or Philbin gets fired and Tannenbaum gets to hire "his guy". In Ross' mind, the situation is handled. And in a way hes right, its just handled in way that means we are totally ****ed.

We've tried signing the big FA's. Now it's time to build on young drafted talent starting with James and Landry. This is what GB does, why not us?

Miami needs to look at the models of success in the NFL. Since the salary cap era teams that have been the most successful include New England, Pittsburgh, Green Bay and Philadelphia. Those teams typically aren't major players in free agency, but almost always are the teams getting awarded the most comp picks.

Looking at New England, Tom Brady was a comp pick in the sixth round. That means every team, including New England, had six chances to draft Brady. Obviously, the Patriots weren't expecting him to be a franchise quarterback. But it is interesting that their best player came through that route, which shows that comp picks can be important.

The Dolphins need to do a much better job in the draft and in developing their own players. They should use free agency to fill the gaps, like most of the successful teams do.

The biggest thing they do is let a player go a year too early than to keep a player a year too long. That is where the emotion must be taken out and the business aspect must kick in. As much as I love watching Wake, I wouldn't be upset trading him this off-season just based on that philosophy. I also don't expect Miami to be serious contenders next year, playoffs maybe, but not Super Bowl and I think they could do that with or without him.

It would also be fair to him. For all hes done for us, hes never been on a winning team.

For a competitor like Wake, thats got to grate. This team wont contend for years, let him go someplace where he has a chance before his career is over.

Let's hope the Dolphins win the SB bid soon then! Let's get this **** over with!

I don't see us writing the season off. At the same time, don't see us going all out in FA. I'm guessing that we sign a couple of young guys in FA to long term deals, and fill in other needs short term. It's surprising how few players we have under contract next year, and the amount of cap space that could be available.

As you say, we will see what we do in FA but, I would be betting that it's not going to be a whole lot, at least long term.

Honestly every team has people in place to look not at just the current year and not even the next year. If an organization is good they should employee visionaries that see at least 5 years down the road concerning most subjects .... especially the cap. Every team needs to have a multiyear plan for how the money should be spent.
