Chase Allen knows that feeling. He's been present at Pro Days before, rooting on past Southern Illinois teammates who were making their pitch to scouts. In March, he took his turn -- he traveled to Northwestern University, a Power Five school gracious enough to allow small school products to ply their trade along with the Wildcats. Allen did not disappoint. The inside linebacker prospect ran a blazing 4.58-second time in the 40-yard dash, and an uber-quick 6.88 in the 3-cone drill. Combine that with 23 reps of benching 225 pounds and an official 6-foot-4, 241-pound measured frame -- along with his production during his SIU career -- and you have yourself one excellent prospect. At the NFL Combine, only two linebackers -- inside or outside -- matched or beat Allen's 40 time, and only four matched or beat his cone drill time.
"It's out of my hands now after the Pro Day," Allen told HERO Sports this week. "Now I just plan to stay in shape for rookie mini-camp, wherever that is. I'm just going to control what I can control at this point."

The Miami Dolphins have certainly noticed Allen and are in frequent contact. A trip to Miami is coming soon. The speed and the size combination, coupled with zero character issues, makes him a prime candidate for a job in the NFL. His 324 career tackles also prove he can make an opponent pay, and he has proven he can make plays against FBS schools. He had a season-high 11 tackles and 1 TFL against Florida Atlantic last year, 7 tackles against Indiana as a junior, 10 tackles against Purdue as a sophomore, and two tackles for loss as a backup against Illinois in his first college game back in 2013.

Small schools sometimes lack the coaching to elevate their player's effectiveness. Maybe this guy is a diamond in the rough.
At his worst I imagine he will still have a better career than Dion Jordan.

I get nervous about small school guys, but plenty have had major impact and great careers. Just have to be careful not to reach with them is my feeling.

Seems like the type of small school player that makes it in the league. Very athletic.

While many smaller division I school players don't translate to NFL level talent, let's not forget players like Bryan Cox and Rodney Harrison, to name a couple, who came from another small Illinois school and easily translated into the NFL. Just sayin', keep your options open, you never know what you might get from some of these smaller schools.

Looks like Miami is searching for some mid-round options at linebacker. Don't know anything about the player, but do wonder where he's projected. Wouldn't doubt if the Dolphins took a couple of linebackers with those three 5th round picks.

As much as I'd like to see and early pick at linebacker, I really think the first two rounds will go DE and OG. Third round could be a linebacker or safety.

Undrafted free agent material to me. Small school guys generally play small school competition. Not a good idea.

Worth using one of 5th round picks for Allen only if we get a LB in the first 3 rounds. DE first round, Guard second round, and LB 3rd round. Consider Allen, DT, TE, Guard or CB with the 3 5th rounders we have.

We at WIU where Cox and Harrison went have another LB that will be a SR next year Brett Taylor.

Alot of smaller schools make a living getting top players to transfer or just don't make the proper entrance exam grades to get into a bigger school. Marshall Uni. while a D1AA was perennial play-off teams using cast offs from the MAC, Big Ten, and even a lanky WR from FSU

Haha! There are two southern Illinois universities and he goes to my university's sister in Carbondale. Pretty cool
