Dolphins sign DB Quentin Lawrence

Now, as opposed to the Jerome Messam signing, I would be surprised if Lawrence made the team.

He played corner very early in his college stay at McNeese State but was moved to wide receiver for most of his time there. He measured nearly 6'0" (5115) and 184 lbs, ran a 4.40 at his Pro Day, did an unusual 21 bench reps. He was a draft pick of the Chiefs in 2009 but has been a disappointment as a wide receiver and so in 2011 they moved him to corner. He quickly flashed as a corner with the Chiefs and they ended up cutting him in their final round of cuts to get to the 53 man roster, but quickly stashing him on the practice squad.

He was 7-0 as a high jumper in High School and became the Louisiana State Champion in that event. He was also State Champion as one of the legs on a 4x100 meter relay team. He qualified for the NCAA Regionals as a sprinter at McNeese State. He caught 99 balls for 1905 yards and 15 TDs in his receiver career there, which is a 19.2 yards per reception average. He averaged 23.9 yards per kick return in 2005 but only had 106 yards on 7 kick returns in 2007 for whatever reason. His only punt return, he returned for a 70 yard touchdown against North Carolina.

The reason the Dolphins have signed him? My guess is special teams. The Dolphins seem to always love the idea of grabbing a return man project, each year. Chris Williams, Phil Livas...now Quinten Lawrence. That's just a theory.

Nice video. So it appears that punt return of his was a reverse hand-off. Didn't know that. Makes sense.

Bottom line is he just wasn't very interesting with the ball in his hands other than the fact that he could fly. Great athlete, reaches ludicrous speed by his 3rd/4th step. I have a tough time seeing him on defense because of some of the problems with awareness and controlling his speed that he showed on offense, and I'm not sure I see a great return man. I'd rather have Phil Livas back.

This guy's claim to fame coming out of college was his speed. Man he has speed nd thats what Miami needs a lot of on this team. Good signing, imho!

Just watched his YouTube video and the guy looks like good pickup. Maybe he can make it as a S.T./ dime back. You can't teach that kind of speed and maybe he can develop with some good coaching.

Not saying Lawrence won't see time at KR/PR, but I think the Fins project returner this year is CFL import RB Marcus Thigpen.
