Tbh players should be tested on something more important than bench press presses, and that is Squats. Imo leg strength is far more important than chest strength. A much better benchmark would be how many times can they squat 400-500 lbs.

I think you get an idea of their lower body strength in the explosive tests; broad and high jumps. I think the upper body strength measure is important. The more muscle upstairs the better holding onto the ball, taking hits, and blocking/controlling rushers. In a league that has moved to a lot of hand fighting for blocking having that upper body strength is a real factor. As an aside, a 220lb pro level athlete should be able to put up 225lb more times than me. He doesn't, and I'm hardly what you'd call 'fit'.
