The Dolphins also signed safety Ethan Kilmer, who has been with the Cincinnati Bengals the last three seasons.
The 25-year-old Kilmer was a seventh-round draft choice of the Bengals in 2006. He played in all 16 games in his rookie season and finished second on the squad with 18 special teams tackles, while also recovering a fumble. On defense, he posted four tackles and an interception, which came off a Drew Brees pass at New Orleans on November 19, and that he returned 52 yards for a touchdown. He split the 2007 season on Cincinnati's 53-man roster and the injured reserve list. He also spent the first five games of 2008 on injured reserve. Kilmer was a two-year letterman at Penn State (2004-05), who began his collegiate career as a walk-on. He played safety in 2004 before moving to wide receiver the following year, when he caught 15 passes for 236 yards and three touchdowns, including six receptions for 79 yards and a TD in an Orange Bowl win over Florida State. Born January 31, 1983, Kilmer attended Wyalusing (Pa.) High School.
This has been a good day for me. The Dolphins signed two former Penn State players in Wake and Kilmer.

How can you be on the IR for the first 5 games of a season? I thought players on IR were done for the season...

I'm worried about those injuries. Is he all good now?

Not sure, but I think Parcells and Ireland would't have signed him if they were real worried about his injuries. He likely won't make the team and is probably just a camp body. I would be surprised if he is on the team come September.

Cameron Wake though is not just a camp body. He is a potenial future starter.

Could be safety depth and a solid special teamer. We really are think as hell at safety with 4 guys to my knowledge. He will compete for a job on the team. Him and Courtney Bryan will go at it for that backup FS role.

you can take them off IR about week 7 i think and they can be on the active roster but after week 7 you cant

ok i have a STUPID question! how are we signing these players? i thought you cant sign anyone until FA begins feb27? how does this work anyone?

im liking that we are actually active in the offseason instead of being stagnate like we used to be.

Neither of these players are UFA or RFA. Meaning, they do not currently belong to any team. February 27th is for players who were under contract in 2008 but will have them expire after the 08' season. The new year begins February 27th, so they are still technically under contract.

If you are not under contract, you can sign with anyone at any time. Wake was in the CFL, so he is not property of any NFL team. Kilmer was released, so he also doesn't belong to any team.

Look at last year, we released Zach Thomas and he was able to sign with a new team before Free Agency started.

Well Wake was in Canada and Kilmer was not on the Bengals roster. U can sign a free agent at any time.

The Free Agency date of February 27th is the date when Potential Free Agents that are on a team . . . no longer are apart of that team and can be signed by another team.

Crowder, Dansby, Suggs . . . all those guys become Free Agents on that day. They aren't Free Agents right now.
