The team has signed quarterback Brock Jensen and linebacker Chris McCain.

He was dismissed from Cal last September
It was announced late Sunday night that linebacker Chris McCain has been dismissed from the Cal football team. I honestly didn’t want to write anything because I thought it was a joke. But, as we head to mid-week, it is apparent that not only was it not a joke, but this is something that had been a long time coming.

We all know the Chris McCain story. A five-star linebacker from Greensboro, North Carolina, who had some academic issues and resolved them before the season to get back into the starting lineup. He had shown that he was on his way to becoming the terrorizing pass rush he was supposed to be for Cal, and then this weekend happened.

The rumors are that McCain’s constant fake “in-game injuries” that he would often come back from rubbed his teammates the wrong way. But those are just rumors. What is fact is that Sonny Dykes said that this wasn’t based on academics and this was the last straw in a long line of issues surrounding the talented player. We also found out Monday that he is still enrolled at Berkeley, but is not with the team.

Hickey hasn't been shying away from controversial players in the UDFA field. Taking a chance on a talented guy with off the field issues/character issues is risky, but with little to no guaranteed money involved the risk is limited.

dont know anything about mccain but the jensen signing is great.

after reading the above story on his faking injuries and other antics, he sounds like a head case.

to bad. the kid sounds like he has some real talent.

So that's the fourth 5 star recruit we've added, two were undrafted with baggage and Landry fell because of his 40. Hickey doesn't seem too shy about adding players with a lot of upside even if they aren't choir boys.

True, unless they make the roster at the expense of another players roster spot and then do something stupid and get released etc not to say people don't deserve second chances..its a slipperly slope IMO. The thought that the front office only wants leaders with good character etc. does not seem to be 100% set in stone though that’s for sure.

The 6-foot-6, 250-pound McCain had long been one of the most mercurial talents on the Golden Bear roster, with the athleticism to take over games (four tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss with 1.5 sacks in last season's upset win over UCLA) and the immaturity to disappear from them.

Signing McCain sounds like not just an "above average" but a "huge" potential gain with little or no risk. Going ahead and kicking the tires IMO is a prudent and savvy business decision.

He might look 200 flat in that pic but he is listed at NFL.com at 6'6" 250.

Measured in at 6'5 3/8" 224 lbs at his pro day. Ran 4.67 40 with a 1.69 10-yard split. Only 10 reps on the bench, 32" vert. 10' 1" broad jump...meh.

Brock is the man, the guy is deadly accurate and leads his receivers really well. I can not believe he was not drafted.

Enjoy.
