"The Dolphins signed defensive tackle Howard Green to a contract for 2006. A three-year NFL veteran, Green played under Dolphins coach Nick Saban at Louisiana State University in 2000 and 2001."

Anyone know why he did not play this year? Any information?

I don't know, but I'm afraid that if he was available now it's because of injury...or suck.

I'd say he's training camp fodder.

I just think Saban is just trying to make sure he gets a good look at every option available

tru... but you would think that Saban would know all he needs to know about this guy since he went to LSU while Saban was there... hmmmm...

He did start 12 games for the Saints in 2004. He dnp in 2005 and that may have been due to injury, but if we signed him now, he must have passed his physical.
He is real widebody at 6-2 and 320. He is naturally strong, can get low and create a roadblock in the middle, but does not pursue well outside the tackle box. I hope we keep Traylor for one more year, and best case scenario is Green could be a good young player to back him up and rotate in every third series or so.

Good! A pleasant surprise... love those!

So I guess he was released with an injury settlement, but he's healed since...?

It could be a little more to it. He played for Saban, he started 12 games in the NFL before injury, and he's healthy now. I don't think Saban would've rushed out and signed him this early if he thought he was just fodder. I think it may be a little more to it. Only time will tell. Saban probably believes he is good enough to challenge the roster spots of Jeff Zgonina who will be 36 years old this year, or challenge Josh Shaw.

Was Saban at LSU in 2000 and 2001? I didn't think he'd been there that long.

2000 was his first season at LSU, so yes Saban coached Green there.

I think the need is to be honest here... and allow for benefit of the doubt.... Saban and staff don't do anything without a purpose... they must see something in the guy... let it play out before you jump to the conclusions.
