Olivier Vernon was put on timeout during Thursday's joint practice with the Carolina Panthers.
A day after punching Panthers offensive tackle Michael Oher, triggering an offensive line versus defensive line brawl, the Dolphins' starting defensive end was held out of 11-on-11 work the entire day.
While Joe Philbin had warned his players fighting with the Panthers would not be tolerated in the two-day practice sessions at Wofford College, the coach insisted Thursday that Vernon's limited participation was caused by a nagging injury and not a punishment.
"A little medical situation we were just being preventive with," Philbin said.
With Vernon sidelined, second-year defensive end Terrence Fede took the first-team reps at right defensive end. Fede, a 2014 seventh-round pick, has been one of the preseason's pleasant surprises because of the dominance he's shown against the Dolphins' second-team offensive line.
"It felt good to go with the ones," said Fede, who played sparingly on defense last season but led the Dolphins to a 37-35 victory over the Minnesota Vikings last year when he blocked a punt in the end zone, producing a fourth-quarter safety. "Most of camp I've been going against the twos, sometimes the ones, so today was a great opportunity for me to get out there."
Vernon downplayed the fight with Oher, who swung him to the ground during their one-on-one drill against each other Wednesday, calling it "a little tussle."
It's unclear whether that little tussle, or Vernon's undisclosed injury, will keep him from participating in Saturday night's exhibition game against the Panthers.
While Wednesday's practice featured a few heated moments between the teams, Thursday's action was very cordial throughout the two-hour practice session.
