"On Shula: Johnson had Shula’s son David on his Cowboys’ coaching staff when he took the job in 1989. In ’89 and ’90, David Shula was offensive coordinator and QB coach. In 1991, Johnson decided to hire Norv Turner as offensive coordinator and move David Shula to receivers coach. Out of professional courtesy, Johnson called Don Shula. In the book, Johnson writes: “Don was angry in a way that never left him.” In 1996, when Johnson succeeded Don Shula as Dolphins coach, he writes that in their first meeting after Shula retired, the ex-coach told Johnson, “You really f—ed up.” Shula told him he’d cut too many veterans like Troy Vincent, and Johnson told him he had little choice because he inherited a salary-cap mess.

Before his first season in Miami, Johnson said he knew he was supposed to talk about the great tradition of the Dolphins, and to pay tribute to those who’d laid the groundwork there. “Well, forget that,” he said. “I only care about one thing—the present. The people who are here to win now.”

Now you know why Don Shula, the winningest coach in NFL history, was no Johnson fan.

Archie Manning called Johnson before the ’98 draft to ask him to try to work a trade so Peyton would land in Miami. One insurmountable problem, as Johnson writes, was offering Miami’s entire draft to Indianapolis to move up. “We picked 19th,” Johnson said. “People say, well, what would you have done with Dan Marino there? Well, you know, Peyton would’ve been behind Dan. But the way it worked out, Dan missed games every year and so Peyton would’ve been thrown into the lineup.”

Added Johnson: “On top of that, Bill Belichick came that close to coming down and being my defensive coordinator. We could’ve had Peyton Manning as our quarterback and Bill Belichick as my defensive coordinator. But he had too much loyalty to Bill Parcells [on the Jets’ staff].”"

Dan didn't miss any games in 1998 and only played one more year. Manning would have been a great successor to Marino. Can you even imagine? I dislike Johnson even more now.

I wish JJ could have kept Vincent. I know those were early days of salary cap and teams hadn't figured out creative ways to keep talent.

I remember watching Miami lose a few games because of poor clock management early in JJ's tenure too. Can't remember ever seeing that happen under Shula.

As to Peyton Manning, JJ should have made that trade. It essentially would have been Pat Surtain and Kenny Mixon for Manning. Love Surtain, but that's a no-brainer.

Johnson was right in hiring Norv Turner to replace Dave Shula as the Cowboys OC. Shula wasn’t a good coach and merely got a job in the NFL because of who his father was.

When JJ replaced Don Shula as the Dolphins head coach, it was time for a new head coach in Miami. As great as Shula had been at one time, he was no longer the great head coach he had once been.

The only issue I had with JJ was he was responsible for convincing Huizenga to hire Wannstedt once Johnson decided he no longer wanted to be the head coach.

JJ had a contract for Vincent, but he wouldn't include a no trade clause. Vincent was afraid he'd sign, then JJ would flip him.
So Troy went to Philly.
For me, losing Vincent is my all-time most painful free agent loss.

JJ was lobbying for the phins job even while shula was coach. Before Shulas last season, JJ predicted Miami to win the superbowl on TV.......not because he thought miami was gonna win it but solely to try to put that added pressure on shula and the dolphins that if they didnt win the superbowl it was because the team underachieved and needed a new coach. JJ was hoping the phins failed badly shulas last year

For me it’s Zach Thomas. When Parcells and Co. came in they cut him while gutting the roster and shedding cap. Didn’t sit right with me then, doesn’t sit right with me now. Thomas had earned the right to retire a Fin. Should have spent his entire career here.

It doesn’t matter if he wanted the Dolphin job or not. Huizenga was the Dolphins owner and it was entirely his decision to hire Johnson and to push Shula out. I have never understood the blame Johnson gets for Huizenga decision to move on from Shula.

It doesn’t matter one bit that Johnson predicted that the Dolphins would win the SB. The fact is that in Shula’s final year, the Dolphins were loaded with former first round picks and had spent millions on free agents. Many members of the media predicted the Dolphins would win the SB that season and the fact is they did underachieve based on expectations.

It is just your believe Johnson wanted Shula and the Dolphins to fail. The fact is he was just another member of the media that expected the Dolphins to be much better than they ended up being that season. Huizenga was obviously frustrated that the team failed to live up to expectations and that’s why the change at the head coaching position was made.

im not blaming JJ....he wanted the job...there isnt anything wrong with that......and wayne fired shula with the full intention of hiring JJ.....you think im creating a blame game and trying to make someone look like the bad guy...im not....im just citing observations

That's a good call.
Only thing with Zach, he was getting up in age.
Troy was on his first FA experience.

Wait, why would you dislike him more? why do you dislike him at all?
I know a lot of Fin fans don't like JJ, but I do and have since the day he was hired.
He made mistakes, had/has his flaws, but I think, had he been a long-termer, would have made us a serious contender for years, and ultimately got us back to the big game.
I still love listening to him talk about football.

I understand that is your observations. I was just pointing out that Johnson was not the only individual in the media that expected the Dolphins to win the SB in Shula’s finale season.

I think Huizenga was extremely frustrated that the team underperformed after spending so much money before the season. If the Dolphins had made it to the SB, I don’t think he would had replaced Shula with Johnson. To Huizenga it was merely a business decision and Johnson was thought to be the best head coach available at the time and that’s why I believe Huizenga hired Johnson. Not because Johnson had predicted the Dolphins would win the SB and they didn’t.

not disagreeing with most of this...i think you misunderstood me.....i think wayne wanted JJ for a while because he thought he was the best guy for the job and he knew he couldnt just fire a legend like shula without it looking very justifiable.....he didnt fire Shula simply cause of JJs prediction, i dont remember any other media member actually picking the phins to win it all btw......im saying JJ did it with motives....he wanted the job......him saying anything less than a superbowl is an indictment on Shula....he wasnt gonna predict the phins to lose in the wild card cause if thats how it played out, it would make it seem less justifiable to fire a guy like shula
