Dolphins to remain a hybrid 3-4 defense

Where does that leave PS negotiations?
I have a hard time thinking Soliai is coming back. I think we offered him a $10 or $11 million dollar per year deal (can't remember the length) and him and his agent said no.

We only have about $15 million in cap space and 39 players signed...not to mention we need about $5 million reserved for the rookie draft picks. My guess is we'll try to restructure the contracts of Long, Dansby and possibly Marshall to free up some cap room and we'll end up cutting Bell and one or two other guys to get us $20+ million under the cap...even at that point Soliai would want more than half of that cap space. We can't franchise him again since it will bump his salary up to something like $15 million. Don't think there is much choice in the matter unless he tests the market and finds there aren't as many takers as he thought and the money isn't out there which for most teams it's not.

The reason why you play a hybrid is partly because you don't have a big time nose tackle or you don't trust him to be taking on double teams the entire game. From what I have seen in a hybrid 34 the nt is a bit more athletic and lighter. Starks would be a good fit. I am sure he will be playing more one tech instead of the traditional zero tech that a 34 nt plays.

Well, it kind of effects our own FA's, our decisions in FA and the draft.....so it's kind of a big deal.

That's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about the poster's reactions as to weather we are running a 3-4, 4-3, or hybrid defense. Personally I don't care what we run as long as it works.

Agreed.

No problem,

I agree with your point now that I actually understand the point you were making, lol!

I believe they did offer a Big Paul a deal for $10-$14 mil signing bonus. Paul and his agent refused then Paul went out and had a crappy season compare to before.

Smooth move by Paul and his agent :rolleyes2: ; hes worth resigning for the right price.

We have pieces for either formation. When the time is right, we will run either of these.

It would be like trying to specify whether a team runs dime or nickel formations. Some teams may prefer one formation over the other, but at times, other formations can be used.

Hybrid just means that there will be a combination of defenses used and using players interchangeably.
I agree, thats a key thing. You can run anything you want at any time. No one is making you only use one formation, when the time calls for switch ups, then you make them.

When STARKS played NT, he was mediocre on his BEST day. He couldn't handle it: deal w/it!!

Just because he would be playing as a 34 NT does not mean he would be doing the same things that Paul Soliai has been doing. I am sure you would trust Starks in a 43 as the NT right? Starks is not a guy who is going to be taking on double teams but in a 1 gap D he can make plays...like he did in Tenn.

this is why I dont have draft picks listed. The difference between Uphsaw and Coples/Ingram and others is what has me confused.

I am thinking more Upshaw, Perry, and Vinny Curry.

i don't know how you plan on running a lot of 34 looks and not having a legit nose anchoring it...if solia gets away there's nothing in house that can get the job done...

this is when i wish we had just kept that kid in camp last year that was plucked off waivers by the panthers so we could at least have a developmental prospect for the position in house...

I'm sure we'll get a NT prospect either in the draft,or during the UDFA period,or i hope we do.

you lose solia and you plan on running a lot of 34 looks especially on early downs and nose not only becomes a need...it becomes a massive one...
