The
Miami Dolphins have discussed moving
Dion Jordan to linebacker full-time, making him
Philip Wheeler's replacement as the team's starting strong side linebacker, but no decision has been made yet.
“That’s one [decision] we’re going to keep talking through," Dolphins vice president Mike Tannenbaum said at the
NFL's Owner's Meetings when discussing Jordan, the team's 2013 first-round pick.
Jordan has been used as a hybrid pass rusher for the past two seasons, typically coming on the field as a linebacker in the speed package on passing downs. He's contributed 46 tackles and three sacks in the 26 NFL games he's played.
But his first start came last season in the seasonn finale as Wheeler's replacement at strong side linebacker. Many insiders believe Jordan's NFL career could flourish if he were moved to linebacker full-time, returning to the position he played in the University of Oregon's 3-4 defense.
"Obviously he’s a great pressure player in the front seven, a great athlete. We all see the play last year where he’s running 60 yards down-field covering [
Lions receiver]
Calvin Johnson. There aren’t many people on the planet that can do those things," Tannenbaum continued. "He’s a young athletic guy with great upside and we’ll see how that plays out.”
Jordan, who is 6-foot-6, 275 pounds, is not opposed to a position switch, but admitted at the end of the 2014 season that he views himself as a NFL pass rusher.
