Johnson, running backs Damien Williams (Oklahoma) and Orleans Darkwa (Tulane), linebacker Chris McCain (California) and tight end Gator Hoskins (Marshall) all made their NFL debuts in last week’s 33-20 victory over New England. And each did fairly well and made a contribution.
Williams and Darkwa, who are on the kickoff coverage team, were on the field for the opening kickoff.
McCain had a blocked punt and a sack.
Johnson recovered a
Tom Brady fumble after a Cam Wake sack.
Hoskins had one reception for seven yards.
The challenge is to do it again, and do better, this week at Buffalo.
They’re all in this thing together.
Well, sort of.
On the day the quintet found out they made the roster they all went to dinner to celebrate.
“It was me, Gator Hoskins, Damien Williams, Orleans Darkwa, and McCain,” Johnson recalled. “We went out and had a great meal.”
Williams had a similar recollection.
“I went out with the rookies,” he said, “We all went out to eat. It was cool.”
Actually, they didn’t all go out to eat. McCain didn’t even know there was a celebration dinner until a reporter inquired.
“What dinner?” McCain said.
The dinner. The one where all the undrafted rookies celebrated making the 53-man roster.
“A dinner?” McCain asked.
Yeah, the dinner.
“I didn’t go with them,” he said.
Johnson said the dinner was impromptu. “It just happened,” he said. “We were staying at the hotel at the time and everybody just came knocking on each other’s door. ‘You here?’ ‘Yeah, I’m here. You here?’ ‘I ain’t going nowhere.’ ‘Well let’s go eat, then.’
“It was one of those deals,” Johnson explained. “Nobody set up the organizing. It was just one of those things that happened.”
