With Al Groh headed to Georgia Tech, Keith Butler declining the Dolphins’ offer and remaining in Pittsburgh, Mike Zimmer signing an extension Cincinnati and Romeo Crennel in Kansas City, the Dolphins have moved to Plan B.
The most obvious move would be an in-house promotion for Todd Bowles, the team’s secondary coach and assistant head coach.
Bowles, 46, interviewed for the Rams and Lions head coaching openings last winter, played safety for eight NFL seasons and has been with Sparano since 2005 in Dallas.
Bowles, however, isn’t going to excite many outside the organization because last season’s pass defense cost the Dolphins week after week. Miami 24th-ranked pass D finished 15th in the AFC in yards per pass play (13.3), but Bowles also had to work with two rookie cornerbacks and a free safety who is really a strong safety.
